Description
F. DU PRIEST April 3, 1956 STADIUM SEAT Filed Sept. 24, 1953 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS nited States Patent STIUM SEAT Florence Du Priest, Waco,I Tex. Application September 24, 1953', Serial No. 382,063
3 Claims. (Cl. 155-133) This invention relates to a stadium seat.
It is an object of this invention to provide a foldable and portable stadium seat to be easily carried by a user when and where desired.
It is an important object of this invention` to provide a foldable and portable stadium seat for releasable hooked connection to a stadium seat and releasable connection of a bag to the stadium seat, the bag being foldable between the seat and Ythe back of the foldable seat in the folded condition thereof.
lt is a further object of this invention to provide a lightweight and foldable stadium seatl of the kind to be particularly described hereinafter which may be easily carried about by the user and constructed' at an economical cost by manufacturers to bev distributed ati an* attractive price to the buyer.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a foldable stadium seat constructed according to an embodiment of this invention, the stadium seat being in its unfolded and open condition.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the folding seat shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the stadium seat in its folded position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, enlarged, detailed section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed section taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary, enlarged rear elevation of the seat attaching hook of this invention.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary enlarged side elevation of the seat attaching hook.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally a stadium seat constructed according to an embodiment of this invention. The stadium seat 10 is adapted to be seated onto a conventional stadium seat S and the stadium seat 10 may be carried about by a person using the seat and desiring a covering for the stadium seat S at any particular position where the owner of the stadium seat 10 desires. The stadium seat 10 is formed with a foot bag 11 connected thereto to be wrapped about the feet of the user of the seat 10 under certain weather conditions where it is particularly desirable to have the feet of the user covered.
The stadium seat 10 is formed with a seat frame 12 and a back frame 13 pivotally connected thereto so that the back frame 13 may be extended upwardly from the seat frame 12 when the seat 10 is to be used. A cover 14 is suitably secured to both of the frames 12 and 13 and will provide a hinged connection at the juncture of the frames 12 and 13 so that the back frame 13 may be moved upwardly from the seat frame 12 to ice 2,. the unfolded position as clearly shown in Fig.` l of the drawings. A exible cord 15 is secured' at one end tothe seatframe 1'2 and' at the other en'd to the back frame I3. The ends of the cord' or brace 13 are suitably secured` to the frames 12 and 13 intermediate the length thereof.
A handle 16 is secured to one of the frame members, as the back frame member 12, intermediate the length thereof so that when the frames 12 and 13 are folded together the entire seat 10 may be carried about from oneplace to another.
A length of zipper 1.7 is secured to the opposite side edges of the cover 14 and extends along` the length of the `back and seat of the portable seat 10. A slider is slidable along the length of each of the zippers 17 and may be moved with the zipper handle 19. Each of the zippers I7 is provided with zipper teeth 18 secured on a zipper tape so that the slider 17', upon its movement along the lengthV of each of the zippers will effect the inter-engagement of the zipper teeth on the co-related zippers of the seat andV back of the stadium seat 10.
In order to secure the stadium seat 10 to a rigid stadium seat- S, a hinge is provided for attachment to` the seat frame I2and to the rigid seat S. The hinge for connection Vof the stadium seat 1Y0 to the rigid stadium seat S`, comprises a horizontal hinge barrel. 23 longitudinally of the seat' frame 12 adjacent the opposite sid'esof` and at the forward edge of the seat frarne and nre' hinge arm 28 is rotatable about the hinge about a horizontal axis. A bolt 26 is secured for rotary movement to the hinge arm or flap 28 for rotatable movement from a folded position underlying the seat of the stadium seat 10 to a vertically extending position hooked over one edge of the stadium seat S. A hook 25 is fixed to or formed on the other end of the bolt 26 and will underlie the bottom portion of the stationary stadium seat S, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The hinge for the hook 25 comprises one hinge leaf 25' extending horizontally of the seat of the stadium seat 10 and the second leaf or flap 28 which is normally extended in a vertical position depending from the hinge leaf 27 as clearly shown in Figs, 2 and 5 of the drawings.
The flap 28, or hinge leaf will depend from the hinge 4 and lie outwardly of the hook 25. The bolt 26 is rotatable in relation to the hinge arm 28 and is biased by a spring 24 in a direction to hook the hook under the seat S. The arm 28 is biased in its rotation in the spring by resilient spring means in such a manner that the bolt 26 and the ap 28 are spring pressed in their rotation about the spring 24 to a position parallel to the hinge leaf 27 when the seat 10 is removed from the stadium seat S.
When the stadium seat 10 is hookingly engaged on the seat S, the foot bag 11 may be secured to the forward edge of the lower horizontal seat of the seat 10 by suitable snap fasteners. Snap fasteners 29 are secured to one edge of the foot bag 11 and co-related snap fasteners 30 are iixedly secured to the forward edge of the seat frame 12 for detachably securing the foot bag 11 to the seat 10 when and as desired.
In the normal use and operation of the stadium seat 10, the back 13 will be initially extended from the seat 12 and the foot bag 11 secured thereto. The rear wall 20 of the foot bag 11 will carry the snaps 29 for engagement with the snaps Sil which are fixed on the seat. When the seat 10 is to be folded in its closed position, the foot bag 11 is initially disengaged from the seat frame 12 and placed to be between the seat and the back of the seat as the back of the seat is folded into overlying posiamener:
tion with the seat of the seat 10. The aps 28 may then be hinged onto the seat portion of the seat 10 and the zippers moved to closed position so that the closed foldable seat 10 may be carried about by the handle I6 Where andas desired.
While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown' and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
