INSTRUMENT FOR DEFINING ARCS AND IRREGULAR CURVES Filed Dec. 14, 1938 flamr/m eziswmm ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 5, 1940 I UNITED .QSTATES PATENT OFFlCE INSTRUMENT FOR DEFINING ARCS IRREGULAR CURVES Oscar H. Nelson, Peshtigo, Wis. Application December 14, 1938, Serial No. 245.722
2 Claims. (01. 33-176) My invention relates to improvements in inaccommodating therethrough the spaced arms I struments for defining arcs and irregular curves of the respective bars. Slidably mounted in the and has as one of the principal objects thereof blocks I5, between the arms I, are eye bolts H, the provision of an instrument of the above dethe eyed ends of which have slidably mounted 5 scribed character which is simple in constructherein adjusting rods l8 of a like construction tion, durable in use, efficient in operation and as the rod I3. The opposite ends of the bolts I1 economical in manufacture. have threaded thereon lock nuts I9 bearing Another object of my invention is to provide a against the outer faces of the blocks I5 and servdevice of the character described which may be ing to clamp the rods I8 against the opposite faces 10 readily adjustable to conform to the contour of a of the respective arms 1 whereby to maintain said 10 surface and utilized in a manner whereby the rod in adjusted position relative to the bars. The contour may be delineated on another surface. lower ends of the rods I3 and I! are provided Other objects and advantages will be apparent with spherical heads 20 whereby to preclude withfrom the following description, appended claims drawal of said rods from the respective eye bolts.
and annexed drawing. The opposite ends of the rods I3 and H are 15 Referring to the drawing wherein like referthreadedly fixed within housings 2| and which ence characters designate like parts throughout are provided with tongues 22 pivotally connected the several views: between the bifurcated ends of blocks 23 by Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, the means. of bolts 24. A block 23 is provided for parts thereof being arranged to define the coneach of the rods I3 and I! as clearly illustrated 20 tour of a concave surface. in Figure 1 of the drawing and secured to said Figure 2 is a transverse sectional viewtaken on blocks is a resilient pliable strip25 by means of the line 22 of Figure 1. screws 26.
Figure 3 is a horizontal detail sectional View The faces of the strip 25 are provided with' 25 taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1. scale markings denoting inches and fractions 25 Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the thereof. The ends of the strip 25 have secured line 4-4 of Figure 1. thereto semi-circular guides 21 on which are Figure 5 is a detail side elevation of one of the mounted arcuate shaped members 28 fashioned end hooks partly in section. with slots receiving therethrough screws threaded 30 Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of the end hook. into the guides 21. The members 28 are adapted 30 v Figure 7 is a detail side elevation of one of the to be adjusted over the ends of the strip 25 for ends of the bars, partly in section, and depicting engagement with the ends of adjacent surfaces the means for maintaining the arms of said bar when desired. of bars 5, the inner ends of which are pivotally In use, the rods I3 and I! are adjusted relaconnected by means of a hinge 6. Each of said tive to the respective eye bolts to enable the strip bars is provided with a pair of spaced arms I, to conform to the contour of a desired surface. the outer ends of which are connected together When thus adjusted, the lock nuts are tightened in spaced relation by means of a spacer 8 secured to secure said rods in fixed position relative to 40 therebetween by a bolt 8a. The inner ends of the bars thereby permitting the contour defined said arms are connected to one of a pair of hinge y the S p 25 to be delineated On er 1- leaves 9 of the hinge 6. face.
The hinge leaves 9 are fashioned with serrated y instrument is especially adaptable n inabutting faces I0 and with registering openings stances Where it is desirous of forming a ber 45 II through which extends an eye bolt I2, The of like templets and also for use in connection eyed end of the bolt l2 has slidably mounted with the hulls of ships and. the like in dev p therein an adjusting rod I3 and the opposite end the irre curve e o of said bolt has threaded thereon a lock nut I4 It is also'obvious that the invention is not conwhereby to clamp the hinge leaves together and fined to the herein described use therefor as it secure the rod I3 in adjusted position against one may be utilized for any purpose to which it is of the outer faces of said leaves as clearly iladaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly underlustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing. stood that the invention is not limited to the spe- Slidably mounted on the bars 5 is a plurality cific construction as illustrated and described, as of spaced blocks I5 fashioned with recesses I6 the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, hinged pairs of spaced bars, blocks slidably mounted between the bars of each pair and provided with sections overlying one face of the bars, an eye bolt slidably extending through each block, rods slidably extending through the eyes of said bolts and slidably engaging the opposite face of said bars, a flexible strip pivoted to the ends of said rods and adjustable therewith with respect to said blocks to define a desired contour, and means operable on said bolts and engaging said sections to clamp said rods and said blocks to said bars against relative movement to maintain said strip in a condition defining said contour.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, connected pairs of spaced bars, blocks mounted on the bars of each pair and fashioned with spaced channels slidably accommodating said spaced bars, a member slidably extending through each block, rods extending through said members and slidably engaging the bars on the opposite sides thereof with respect to the blocks, a flexible strip pivoted to the ends of the rods and adjustable with the latter with respect to the bars to define a desired contour, and means mounted on said members and engaging said blocks and operable against said blocks for clamping said rods and said blocks to said bars against relative movement to maintain said strip in a desired configuration with respect to said bars.
