Description

R. L TAYLOR. Fence-Post.
No. 221,878. Patented Nov. 18, 1879.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' REUBEN L. TAYLOR, OF MANCHESTER, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming-part of Letters Patent N 0. 221,878, dated November 18, 1879; application filed July 29, 1879. I
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, REUBEN LINCOLN TAY- 1 LOR, of Manchester, in the county of Delaware, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication.
My invention relates to fence-posts for wire fences and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is a side view of a part of the same.
The post A is made in the form of a cross, either of cast or wrought iron, or of both combined, or of other metal, and of any suitable dimensions, thus forming four ribs or flanges, extending in different directions. The lower portion of the postA is provided with a straight flange, B, on one side, and on the opposite with a T-shaped flange, (3, both of which are made separate from the post, and bolted or otherwise fastened to the ribs or wings of the post at any desired distance from the lower end. These flanges B and O are to be buried in the ground, their upper edges being at or below the surface of the ground, and when so buried they brace four ways, and will prevent any movement of the post in any direction.
One of the ribs or wings at of the post is eveled on both sides, and in the same are made notches or grooves b, in which the fencewires I are placed. These fence-wires are held in place by means of slides D, which are shaped to fit the post and capable of sliding up and down thereon. Each slide is formed or provided with a tongue or lip, it, over the rib of wing a, which tongue or lip, when the slide is moved down, will cover the notch or groove and retain the fence-wire therein. The slide D may then be locked in place by means of a pin, '5, passed through a hole in the rib a above the slide, thus preventing the same from becoming accidentally displaced.
Instead of the notches or grooves 12 in the rib a, said rib may be provided with projections m, having suitable seats to receive the fence-wires, and theslides D,with their tongues, are then constructed to correspond with such formation.
When the post is cast in one piece the flanges B 0 may be cast with it, instead of being made separate and attached to the post; or, if desired, the bot-tom part of the post may be cast on the top part, and the flanges may then be cast with said bottom part.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr In combination with a fence-post having a series of notches or seated projections to receive the fence-wires, the slides D, having projecting tongues or lips' h, with or without a locking device, 2', substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of July, 1879.
REUBEN LINCOLN TAYLOR. Witnesses H. AUBREY ToULMIN, J. JOSEPH McGAR'rHY.
