5 Claims.
This invention relates to concealed hinges, particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use for hanging automobile doors, and one of the objects of the invention is to providean improved hinge of this character comprising a very small number of parts, preferably four, such parts being so constructed that when assembled the door member will strengthen and reinforce the pillar member, thereby maintaining the structure against collapsing and the parts against displacement, relatively one with respect to the other to prevent binding of the parts, and thereby vinsure a free and easy operation of the hinge.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of' novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, and inwhich Figure l is a perspective View of a hinge of this character constructed in accordance with the' principles of this invention and showing the parts in an open position with respect to each other.

The hinge consists essentially of a door member designated generally by the reference character D and a pillar member comprising separate elements I 0 and II. The elements I-II are preferably of L-shaped configuration to form -respectively portions I2 and I3 having openings I4 therethrough by means of which they may be anchored to the pillar of a door frame. y
These elements I2 and I3 constitute brackets having portions I5 between which the door mem'- ber is pivotally mounted. Each of the membersto provide abutting or bearing surfaces or shoul-` 4 ders Ill-20, the ends of the groove being preferably open.
The doormember D comprises an anchor plate 2| having apertures 22 by means of which it may l be anchored or secured to a door, and supported by the plate is an arm comprising portions 23 and 24 arranged at substantially right angles to each other, one end of the arm being anchored to the plate 2|, and at the other end of the arm, trunnions or pins 25 are provided which constitute the pivot pin for pivotally connecting the door member with the pillar elements. Encompassing the pivot pin 25 are shoulders 26 of a diameter considerably greater than the diameter of the pivot pin, so that when the ends of the pivot pin are inserted in the aperture I6 of the respective pillar elements, the periphery of the shouldered portion 26 will contact the bearing surface or shoulder I1 of the pillar element, as shown more clearly in Figure 7 of the drawing.
Projecting from the edges of the arm of the door member are arcuate extensions 2l described from the center or axis of the trunnions 25, each having a surface 28 that is adapted to engage and move against the bearing surface I9 of the respective elements of the pillar member.
' In order to hold the parts in assembled relation there may be provided a casing 29 into which the portions I5 of the pillar elements together with the pivot end of the arm of the door member are adapted to be inserted, the casing forming a housing for these parts.
This housing may be secured against removal in any desired or suitable manner preferably by spot welding. The free edge of the wall 30 of Vthe housing 29 preferably terminates short vof the plane of the free edge 3| of the opposite wall, so that the edge of the wall 30 will form a stop against which the arm of the door member contacts to limit the movement of the door member with respect to the pillar member in one direction.
With this construction it will be noted that the surfaces I1 and I9 of the elements of the pillar member are struck or described from the center or axisof the opening I6 which receives the pivot pin- 25, so that when the parts are assembled and the surface 28 contacts the surface I9, and the periphery of the shoulder 26 contacts with the bearing surface I1, all stress or strain upon the pivot pins 25 will be relieved, by reason of the contact of the surfaces 28 with the bearing surfaces I9, and of the periphery of the shoulder 26 with the surface I1.
At the same time these bearing surfaces, being described upon the same arc, will provide a free swinging movement of the door member with respect to the pillar member.
The shoulder 26 contacts a surface 32 which surrounds the aperture I6 in which the pivot pin 25 is journaled, and serves the function of maintaining the elements of the pillar member in their proper spaced relative positions, so that the elements of the pillar member will be maintained against collapsing and binding upon the pivot pins 25. The elements of the pillar member are maintained in assembled relation with respect to the door member by reason of the casing or housing 29.
The form of the invention shown in Figures 8 and 9 operates in the same manner with the exception that in the edges of the arm 24 of the door member there is provided an arcuate groove 33 to form a shoulder or surface 34. A boss 35 is also provided on the arm 24 to form a bearing surface 36, and this boss is provided with a recess or seat 31 opening through the end thereof to receive a trunnion or projection 38 on the element 39 of the pillar member. This projection 38 is preferably substantially flush with the face 40 of the element 33, and encompassing the projection 38 is a recess 4I into which recess the boss 35 is adapted to be seated when the projection 38 is seated in the recess 31. A projection 42 carried by the element 38 extending at substantially right angles thereto operate in the groove 33 so as to contact the surface 34, and if desired the opposite face 43 of the groove 33 may form a bearing surface for the opposite face of the projection 42.
By forming the periphery 36 of the boss 35 and the walls 34 and 43 of the groove 33 on arcs al1 described from the center of the recess or seat 31, it will be manifest that the parts will be reinforced and braced while at the same time their free movement will not be impaired.
The free end of the boss 35 which is seated in the recess 4| contacting with the base of the recess will also serve as a means for preventing the parts from being displaced, which would result in a binding action of the hinge.
With this improved construction it will be manifest that there is provided a hinge which is constructed of a minimum number of parts, preferably four in number, and when the parts are assembled there will be provided a strong and effective hinge which will, when in use, be concealed and at the same time permit the door in connection with which it is used, to swing out- Wardly, away from the pillar and out of the way.
While the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that Various changes may be made in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
What is claimed as new is:
l. A hinge comprising a pair of relatively movable hinge elements, one of said elements comprising independent members spaced from each other and each having a bearing opening and a bearing surface partially encompassing said opening, said surface being formed on a substantially greater radius than that of said opening and being described from the center of the opening, the other element of the hinge comprising an arm movable between said spaced members, pintles integral with and projecting from opposite edges of said arm, a portion of the periphery of each of the pintles forming abearing surface to contact the respective first said bearing surfaces, another portion of each of the pintles being reduced in diameter to form a trunnion entering the said respective openings, the said spaced members of the hinge and the said arm being provided one with grooves struck from the centers of said openings, and the other with ntegral projections entering and moving in the respective grooves.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of relatively movable hinge elements, one of said elements comprising independent members spaced from each other and each having a bearing opening and a bearing surface partially encompassing said opening, said surface being formed on a substantially greater radius than that of said opening and being described from the center of the opening, the other element of the hinge comprising an arm movable between said spaced members, pintles integral with and projecting from opposite edges of said arm, a portion of the periphery of each of the pintles forming a bearing surface to contact the respective first said bearing surfaces, another portion of each of the pintles being reduced in diameter to form a trunnion entering the said respective openings, the said spaced members of the hinge and the said arm being provided one with grooves struck from the centers of said openings, and the other with integral projections entering and moving in the respective grooves, the said integral projections being of substantial length each having a surface forming an arc struck on a radius described from the centers of the respective pintles.
3. A hinge comprising a pair of relatively movable hinge elements, one of said elements comprising independent members spaced from each other and each having a bearing opening and a bearing surface partially encompassing said opening, said surface being formed on a substantially greater radius than that of said opening and being described from the center of the opening, the other element of the hinge comprising an arm movable between said spaced members, pintles integral with and projecting from opposite edges of said arm, a portion of the periphery of each of the pintles forming a bearing surface to contact the respective first said bearing surfaces, another portion of each of the pintles being reduced in diameter to form a trunnion entering the said respective openings, the said spaced members of the hinge and the said arm being provided one with grooves struck from the centers of said openings, and the other with integral projections entering and moving in the respective grooves, and a housing for maintaining said spaced members in assembled relation and into which housing the said arm is movable.
4. A hinge comprising a pair of relatively movable hinge elements, `one of said elements comprising independent members spaced from each other and each having a bearing opening and a bearing surface partially encompassing said opening, said surface being formed on a substantially greater radius than that of said opening and being described from the center of the opening, the other element of the hinge comprising an arm movable between said spaced members, pintles integral with and projecting from opposite edges of said arm, a portion ofthe periphery of each of the pintles forming a bear-- ing surface to contact the respective rst said bearing surfaces, another portion of each of the pintles being reduced in diameter to form a trunnion, and a shoulder at the base of said trunnion, said trunnons entering the respective said openings and said shoulders engaging the proximate face of the respective said spaced members for maintaining them in xed spaced relation, the said spaced members of the hinge and the said arm being provided one with grooves struck from the centers of said openings, and the other with integral projections entering and moving in the respective grooves.
5. A hinge comprising a pair of relatively movable hinge elements, one of said elements comprising independent members spaced from each other and each having a bearing opening and a bearing surface partially encompassing said opening, said surface being formed on a substantially greater radius than that of said opening and being described from the cen-ter of the opening, the other element of the hinge comprising an arm movable between said spaced members, pintlesintegral with and projecting from opposite edges of said arm, a portion of the periphery of each of the pintles forming a bearing surface to contact the respective rst said bearing surfaces, another portion of each of the pintles being reduced in diameter to form a trunnion entering the said respective openings, the said spaced members of the hinge and the said arm being provided one with grooves struck from the centers of said openings, and the other with integral projections entering and moving in the respective grooves, a portion of the periphery of said pintles coinciding With the outer face of that portion of said spaced members in which the openings for the said trunnons are arranged.
