Application May 1, 1939, Serial No. 27l, 156 4 Claims. (01. 292-45) This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in door fasteners especially adapted for automobiles and other vehicles, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a door latch which iseasily controlled either in the opening or closing of the door and which will be self-tightening, thus eliminating door rattling.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a door fastener of the character stated which will be of simple construction, substantially fool-proof in operation and not susceptible to the ready development of defects.
Inthe drawings:
Figure 1 represents a sectional view taken substantially on a line II of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the latch in effected position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bolt wedge assembly.
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the latch assembly in closed position.
Figure '7 is a sectional view taken substantially on a line 'I-! of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a side elevational view of the cam.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the spring for the rollers.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen in Figures 1 and 2', that numeral 5 represents the body of the vehicle which at the jamb edge of the door opening is provided with the plate 6 suitably secured to the body 5 and this plate 6 -has suitably secured thereto as at l'| a pair ofarms 8-9, each carrying a roller Ill. The
upper edge of the arm 8 and. the lower edge of the arm 3 is notched to receive the inwardly curved end portions II of the leaf spring I2, a lug l3 on the plate serving to prevent displacement of this spring 12. A lug I4 projects outwardly from the plate 6 to support the arm 8 and tends to keep the rollers l0 properly aligned with respect to the wedge bolt l5, this bolt l5 being carried by the jamb side of the case I6, this case being mounted on the edge of the door I! opposed to the plate 6.
The case I6 has the outwardly extending lugs I8 through which the pin I9 is slidably disposed, this pin extending into the recess 20 of the wedge bolt I5 and being threadedly engaged as at 2| in the inner end wall of the said recess 28; C'onvoluted on the pin l9 and being interposed between thesaid innerwall of the recess 28 and the lug I9 is the compression spring 22.
The wedge bolt I5 is of wedge shape and has the laterally disposed web 23 which is slidably disposed through the slot 24 in the case IS. The inner end of the web 23 which has the guide flange 25 for wiping engagement against the inner side of the case l6 supports the roller 26 at its inner end. 10
A shaft 21 is journalled through one side wall 28 of the case I6 and has its other end reduced and journalled as at 29 in the opposite side wall 30 of the case I6. The outer end of the shaft 21 is provided with the operating handle 15 32. The shaft 21 at a point in the case I6 carries the cam wheel 33 for riding engagement with the roller 26. A catch and spring has one end anchored to the cam side of the case l6 as at 34 and its other end attached to the cam 20 wheel 33. I
As can be seen in Figure 6 and also in Figure 1, a pair of bosses, namely an upper boss 34 and a lower boss 35 are provided on the cam wall 36 of the case I6 and between these the 25 wedge bolt I5 normally protrudes. The bosses 34 and 35 have inboard bevels 31 to facilitate passing between the bosses 34 and 35 of the rollers l8 and outboard bevels 38 against which surfaces the rollers are held by the wedging 30 effect of the wedge bolt l5.
It can now be seen that when the door I! is pushed to a closed position the rollers II] will ride inwardly and push the wedge bolt 15 outwardly until the rollers Ill start riding on the 5 bevelled surfaces 38 whereupon the effect of the spring 22 will be to spread the rollers apart and thus prevent return of the rollers.
Torelease the wedge bolt I5, the handle 32 is rotated and this operates the cam 33 so that 40 the roller 26 is moved outwardly, thus retracting the wedge bolt l5 so that the spring I2 can contract the rollers III, thus freeing the door so that it can be readily swung to an open position without any further effort. 45
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven- 50 tion as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the what is invention,
- claimed as new is:
ably mounted deflecting member for deflecting and holding the roller against the keeper, said deflecting member being provided with a laterally disposed rider, a cam, rotatably mounted, manual means for operating the cam, said rider being engaged with the rotary cam, said cam being operative by said manual means to actuate the rider and shift the deflecting member from roller engaged position.
2. A closure fastener comprising .a swingably mounted roller, a bevelled keeper, and a yieldably mounted deflecting member for deflecting and holding the roller against the keeper, said derollers, a pair of pivotal arms carrying the said fleeting member being provided with a laterally disposed rider, a cam rotatably mounted, man-.
ual means for operating the cam, said rider being engaged with the rotary cam, said cam being operative by said manual means to actuate the rider and shift the deflecting member \fromv 3. A closure fastener comprising a swingably mounted roll-er, a bevelled keeper, and a yieldably mounted deflecting member for deflecting and holding the roller against the keeper, said deflecting member being provided with a laterally disposed rider, a cam rotatably mounted,
manual means for operating the cam, said rider being engaged with the rotary cam, said cam being operative by said manual means to actuate the rider, and shift the deflectingmember from roller engaged position and spring return means for the rotary cam.
4. A closure fastener comprising a pair of rollers, a pair of beveled closure carried bosses each having a beveled surface, a wedge member adapted to deflect the rollers to engage the beveled surfaces of the bosses, means for retracting the wedge member to release the arms and the rollers from the beveled bosses, and a spring member having its end portions disposed inwardly and adapted to engage the arms to force the same toward each other.
