Description

A. J. HEADY. Flood-Pence.
No. 221,554. Patented Nov. 11, 1879.
WW I Pl W f N.PETER$. PHOTO-LTHOGRAPH WASHINGTON o c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. HEADY, OF AGENCY CITY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT lN FLOOD-FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,554, dated November 11, 1879; application filed January 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. HEADY, of Agency City, in the county of Wapello, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flood Gates and Fences; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention-consists in the construction and arrangement of a flood-fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my floodfence when closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when open.
My flood-gate fence may be made of any length desired, and divided, so to speak, in sections, each section containing two panels.
At each division of the sections are three posts, A and B B, placed in such a manner that the adjacent panels of two sections can pass between the main post A and their respective posts B. The. main post A is by cross-bars aa connected to each post B, as shown, and upon these crossbars the panels are supported.
Each panel is composed of a series of horizontal bars or boards, 0, having a cross-bar, D, connecting them at one end, and another cross-bar, D, connecting them near the other end, the ends of the horizontal bars O projecting a suitable distance beyond said cross-bar D. The panel is placed so that two of its bars 0 rest upon the cross-bars a, as shown. In the center of; each section is a post, F, to which are secured inclined cleats b b, which iorm locks for holding the inner ends of the two panels constituting the section.
When the water rises the panels are lifted off from the looks I), and swing with the current upon their respective cross-bars a.
In the drawings I have shown one section and a half fully illustrating my invention; but it is obvious that the fence may be made of as many sections as may be required, and in some cases, perhaps, only half a section or one panel may be necessary.
Ordinary fences may be constructed in the same manner, in which case any panel may be used as a gate. at
Having-thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sectional fence constructed, substantially as herein described, with posts A and B B at the divisions of the sections, connected by the bars a a, and each section composed of two panels, 0 D D, swinging on the bars a, and locked to a center post, F, by the inclined cleats b b, firmly secured to said post, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of January, 1879.
ANDREW J. HEADY.
