LIFTING IMPLEMENT Filed June '17, 1939 -In ventor Edward W flo/wer By 2mm A iiorneys v 35 length of suitable metal.
Patented Sept. 10, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in lifting implements and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character 5 embodying a novel construction and arrangement whereby plates, dishes, pans and other receptacles may be conveniently placed in hot ovens and removed therefrom without danger to the user of being burned.
10 Another very important object of the invention is to provide, in a lifting implement comprising a pair of parallel rods, a stationary jaw on one end of said rods and a slidable jaw movable toward the stationary jaw for coaction therewith,
15 novel means for slidably mounting said slidable jaw on the rods.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a lifting implement of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construc- 20 tion, strong, durable, highly eflicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and'still further objects and advantages of the invention will become ap- 25 parent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein the figure is a perspective View of a lifting implement constructed in accordance with the present invention.
'30 Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises: a frame which is designated generally by the reference numeral I, said frame being formed from a single The frame I includes a pair of spaced, parallel rods 2 having depending legs 3 on their forward ends which are connected by an arcuate stationary jaw 4. Inturned arms 5 are provided on the rear ends of the rods 2, 40 said arms terminating in rearwardly directed parallel inner end portions 6 which are anchored in a handle 1.
Slidably mounted on the rods 2 is a pair of coils 8. Depending from the forward ends of the coils 45 8 are legs 9 between which an arcuate movable jaw l extends. Thus, the jaw I0 is movable toward and away from the stationary jaw 4. Extending inwardly and upwardly from the rear ends of the coils 8 are arms 1 l the free end portions of which are anchored in a handle I2.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the handle is held in one hand and the handle I2 is held in the other hand. Through the medium of the handle l2 the jaw it is moved away from the jaw 4 sufficiently to permit the jaws to pass downwardly on diametrically opposite sides of the 10 plate or pan to be lifted. The jaws are then moved toward each other in a manner to firmly clamp the plate, pan or the like therebetween. The jaw I0 is then frictionally secured in adjusted position by swinging the handle !2 downwardly for flexing the coils 8 into binding engagement with the rods 2. Then, still holding the handles 7 and l 2, the plate, pan or the like may be conveniently lifted and transported to any desired point. Of course, to release the plate, pan or the like the jaws are again opened.
It is believed that the many advantages of a lifting implement constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A lifting implement comprising a pair of spaced, parallel rods, a stationary jaw on the forward ends of said rods, a handle on the rear ends of the rods, a movable jaw cooperable with the stationary jaw, legs rising from the movable jaw, coils of substantial length extending rearwardly from the upper ends of said legs around the rods for slidably mounting the movable jaw thereon, rearwardly, upwardly and inwardly converging arms on the rear ends: of the coils, and a handle on the free ends of the arms extending at an acute angle relative to the rods for adjusting the movable jaw and for flexing the coils into binding engagement with said rods for frictionally securing the movable jaw in adjusted position.
