Description
H. ARN. Lighting Device.
No. 221,437. Patented Nov. 11, 1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN ARN, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,437, dated November 11, 1879; application filed May 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN ARN, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful 1mprovement in Lamp Lighters and Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a lamp-lighter so constructed that it may be lengthened or shortened at pleasure; also of a device for raising or lowering the wick.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus, showing the lighting torch down, as when in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the lighting torch turned up. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the torch.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
A is the standard or stem, constructed, as shown, of tubes fitting one inside the other,
' so that it may be made of any length, as desired. I have illustrated as using but two tubes or sections; butany numbermay be used.
The main stem A is provided with arms A A to the latter of which the lighting-torch B is attached by means of the hinge B, and, when in the position shown in Fig. 1, is held stationary by means of the spring-catch B The torch B consists of a hollow tube, shaped as shown, and filled with alcohol or any other suitable fluid, the large end being closed with a plug or cap, and through the small end extends the wick, which absorbs the fluid as it passes down. Over the lighting end is swung a cap, 0, formed as shown, pivoted to the torch B by the pin 0, so that it may be turned up or down, and is prevented from falling below the torch by the pin which rests on the upper side of the torch.
When the torch is lighted the cap is placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, which. prevents it from being easily extinguished.
To prevent the fluid from escaping when the torch is not in use it may be turned up to the position shown in Fig.2 by means of the hinge, and held in that position by the catch D, secured to the arm A The device employed for raising and lowering the wick consists of two arms, E and E, which are formed as distinctly shown, and provided with teeth, so as to securely grasp the lamp-key. The arm E is stationary, and is secured to the upper side of the arm A, while the arm E is hinged to the stem A, and is raised to grasp the lamp-key by means of the cord F, which is attached to it and passes through a hole in the upper arm, E.
By means-of the cord and swinging arm E the device may be used on any sized lamp-key. The operator, by drawing the cord, forces the arm E up and causes the two to bind firmly against the key.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a lamp lighter and extinguisher, the adjustable stem A, consisting of sections sliding one inside the other, in combination with the adjustable clamp, consisting of two arms, shaped as shown, and provided with corrugations, the lower arm being hinged to the stem A, and operated by a cord for raising and lowering the wick, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with the stem A and branch arms A A thelighting-torch B, hinged to the arm A, so that it can be turned up and held by the catch D, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with the stem A, arms A A and the hinged torch B, the swinging cap O, pivoted to the torch B at O, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afilx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMANN ARN. Witnesses:
DANIEL RICHARD, JAMEs G. PATRICK.
