ATTACHMENT FOR. IRONING MACHINES Louise M. Anderson, oak-Park, r11.
Application September 18, 1937, Serial No. 164,485
9 Claims.
This invention relates to attachments for ironing machines, and more particularly to an attachment adapted to extend the length of the ironing roll of a domestic type mangle or ironer to provide support for the overhanging endsof wide pieces passing through the machine.
When ironing sheets, table cloths or the like, or other wide pieces which extend beyond the end of the roll, the projecting portion may become wrinkled or soiled if it is allowed to drop from the It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an extension attachment for the usual domestic ironer, which extension may be so mounted with relation to the ironing roll as to support the projecting portion of the piece being ironed.
A further object is the provision of a suitable extension of the character described which may easily be attached to the end of an ironer roll and which is preferably of substantially the same diameter as the roll and may easily be detached therefrom when desired.
Another object is the provision of a suitable ironing roll extension which may be detachably supported on the overhanging portion of the ironing pad.
It is also an object to provide a tubularv extension adapted to be secured to the free end of an ironer roll, and in which the securing means is easily accessible from inside the tubular extension.
Still further objects are to provide an ironer roll extension which is light in weight, of few parts and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured.
Further objects will be apparent from the specification and the appended claims.
In `the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of one embodiment of the extension attachment mounted on the roller of an ordinary domestic ironer;
Fig. 2 is-an end elevation of the ironer roll illustrated in Fig. 1 and illustrates particularly the supporting means for the attachment;
Fig.` 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the extension attachment and illustrates the method of securing it to the ironer roll. 'Ihe fastening member is shown in full lines;
Fig. 4 is a Vertical section through one of the fastening means and taken on a line substantially corresponding to line 4 5 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through one of the fastening straps with the snap fasteners shown in full lines.
(Cl. IIS-64) Referring to the drawing in detail, the embodiment illustrated comprises the usualironing roll l which forms a part of an ordinary domestic ironer, and which may comprise a rotatable sheet metal cylinder 2, having a cushion-like covering or pad thereon which ordinarily comprises an inner comparatively thick portionv 3, which may be substantially the length of the cylinder, and a thin fabric covering 4, which is wrapped snugly around the cylinder and provided with an overhanging portion 5. The edge of the portion 5 is ordinarily turned back upon itself as illustrated and stitched at 6 to provide a loop portion l. A draw string 8 is inserted in the loop l and the string is drawn taut and tied to snugly retain the cover and overhanging portion thereof in place as shown in Fig. 2.
In the embodiment disclosed, the extension at# tachment preferably comprises av comparatively light, thin walled, tubular member 9 which is adapted to be supported in axial relationship to the ironer roll and snugly against the end thereof. A wire ring l0 is provided to form a-support for the extension member and is ordinarily sold therewith to provide a complete equipment, whereby the user of an ironer may apply the device without requiring the service of a skilled Workman.
The ring I0 is ordinarily attached to the covering by sewing it to the overhanging portion at suitable `spaced points such as indicated by the reference character il in Fig. 2. 'I'he ring may of course be attached in any other suitable manner to provide spaced sections which will enable securing members of the attachment to be inserted between the ring and the covering to which it is attached.
The extension cylinder 9 is preferably made of a light fibrous material such as cardboard or fiber, although sheet metal or other suitable maf terial may be used if desired.
Flexible straps l2 are secured preferably inside the tube 9 and adjacent the inner end thereof and project therefrom as illustrated in Fig. 5. These straps are preferably cloth tape which may be doubled or folded as illustrated in Fig. 5 to provide sufficient strength. The straps are preferably secured in the extension tube by means of a thin ring or band i3, to which these straps are secured by means of a rivet member i4, which latter forms part of a snap fastener. A socket member l5 forming the complemental portion of the snap fastener is secured adjacent the outer end of the strap as shown, and the ring or band i3 having the straps thereon is then cemented or otherwise secured inside the tubular member 9. as illustrated. The band I3 may be omitted if desired and the straps eyeleted or otherwise secured directly to the tube 9. Ordinarily four of the securing straps I5 are providedvand are spaced 'end of the ironer roll. The attachment may easily be removed by loosening the snap fasteners.
The substantially rigid ring I0 similar to that illustrated, is preferable and provides some advantages particularly in that it secures the extension snugly against the end of the ironer-roll and maintains it in alignment therewith, however it will be apparent that modifications may be made in the embodiment illustrated, for instance, the wire ring I0 may be supported adjacent the end of the ironer roll in any suitable manner or it may be in sections forming suitable members adapted ,to be secured to the roll and providing slots to receive the straps I2. It is therefore desired that the invention belimited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1.] An attachment for an ironing machine roll,
vcomprising a tubular Work supporting extension member of substantially the same outside diameter as said roll, and means located Within the diameter of the work surface for removably attaching said member to said roll with the inner end of said member located beyond the end of said roll but adjacent thereto, whereby thev full length of Asaid member constitutes an additional worksurface substantially in alignment with the Work surface of said roll.
2. In an ironing machine having an ironing roll with a free end, a covering on said roll, said covering having a portion overhanging said free l end, attachment supporting means on said overhanging portion, a work supporting extension attachment for said roll and adapted to form a substantially aligned continuation of the work surface of said ironer, and means on saidattachment'for releasable engagement with said Supporting means whereby said attachment may be supported substantially in axial alignmentv with said roll.
