' STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a pocket construction. for garments. v
More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a pocket having two pocket sections with mouth openings extending substantially at certain angles to each other.
Still further the invention proposes that one of the mouth openings be a horizontal top opening iii having a flap associated therewith in a particular manner to be extended across said opening for closing the same with complementary fastening elements .for holding the flap in the closed position.
it Still further the invention proposes that the other of the mouth openings be in the form of a subsantially vertically inclined slot provided with a single or double piping, along its edges, and formed below said horizontal top opening with said fastening elements being associated therewith in a particular manner so that one end of said flap be liftedwhen in the closed position for opening said vertically inclined slot to permit ones hand to be easily inserted therein:
25 For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objectsand advantages thereof,-reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the w invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of a cossack jacket with pockets constructed according to this al invention. v
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. l.
m Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. l with the flap moved to the open position and with a portion of the front layer broken away to reveal interior construction.
The pocket construction for garments, accordgg ing to this invention, is to beformed in a garment constructed with an outer layer of material iii in the form of a wind breaker, cossack, vest,
coat, raincoat, overcoat, or similar garment having a neck opening III", and a front opening iii" an adapted. to be closed by slide fasteners H, buttons, or other similar fastening elements.
The outer layer of material i9 is formed with a horizontal to'p'opening l2 which may be closed by a slide fastener, if so desired, and forming one of a pair of pocket openings extended at angles or substantially at right angles to each other. An intermediate layer of material I3 is mounted behind the outer layer It and has its top edge attached to the bottom edge of the top opening I! by means of a line of stitches H. The top edge of the intermediate layer l3 and the edge portion of the bottom edge of the opening I2 are bent inwards and maintained in position by means of the stitches M which maintain the sections together. 10 A rear layer of material l5 has its top edge attached to the'top edge of the opening I2 and has its sides and bottomattached tothe inner face of the outer layer iii. A flap I6 is provided for closing the top opening l2 and has a lining layer i'i mounted uponthe back face therewith with its side and bottom edges being fixedly attached to the edges of said flap by means of stitches B8. The top edge of the rear layer of material It, the top edge of the flap It, the top edge of the lining i1, and the edge portion of the top edge of the opening 12 are all securely attached'together by means of lines of stitches 59 extending therethrough.
The outer layer H3 is formed with a vertical inclined slot 26 extending from the lower rear portion outside of the main pocket upwardly and forwardly to the upper central portion of the main pocket, which may be closed by a slide I fastener, if so desired, and forms the second 30 mouth opening of the pair of mouth openings previously mentioned. This vertical inclined slot forms an opening to the pocket sections between the outer layer it and the intermediate layer 13. i The top horizontal opening I! forms an opening to the pocket section formed between the intermediate layer i3 and the rear layer IS.
The outer layer of material I0 is constructed of leather, cloth, rubberized material, or any other similar material. The intermediate layer I 3 is formed of several separate sections consisting of a section i3 having one of its sides attached to the edge of said outer layer by means of a line of stitches 20' which also holds the stringer H of the slide fastener H in position if there is one. The bottom edge of the section I3 is attached to the bottom edge of theouter layer by means of a line 01 stitches 2|. The top edge of the section i3, is connected with a section 53 of the same material as the outer layer Ill;
The top edge of the section I3 is connected to the bottom edge of the opening I2 by means of the line of stitches M. The top edge of the section 83' extends slightly above thebottom edge of the opening 63 and forms a decorative strip along 55 (iii this bottom edge as shown in Fig. 4. The remaining side of the section 13 is connected to a section [3 by means of a line of stitches 22 and extends across the vertical inclined slot and has its outer end attached to the top edge of the vertical inclined slot 20 by means of a line of stitches 23. This section I3 is also formed of the same material as the layer l0 and is visible from the front of the jacket (see Figs. 1 and 4). A double layer of material 24 of the same material as the outer layer 10 has its edge fixedly attached to the bottom edge and sides of the slot 20 by means of a line of stitches 25.
The rear layer of material comprises a section I5 which has one 'of its sides attached to the edge of the outer layer adjacent the opening ill by means of the stitches 20' and the other of its sides attached to the outer layer of material by means of a double line of stitches 26 which extends downwards along the outer layer at one side of the flap IS. A false line of double stitches 2'! is formed in the outer layer l0 and extends down from the other side of the flap and gives the appearance as though the vertical pocket extends downwards with a width equal to that of the flap l6.
The top edge of the section I5 is attached to the bottom edge of a section I5 by means of a line of stitches 28; It is the top edge of the section l5 which is attached to the inner face of the lining layer IT by means of the lines of stitches Hi. The section l5 is formed of the same material as the outer layer 10 and extends across the opening l2 and is viewable from the front of the garment when the flap I6 is moved to the open position.
A line of vertical stitches 29 is extended through the sections l3 and l5 and l5 of the intermediate layer l3 and the rear layer l5, re-
spectively, and reduces the size of the pocket forward between the intermediate layer l3 and the rear layer l5. It is really the line of stitches 29 which restricts the size of this pocket and not the stitches 21 which merely engage through the outer layer of material iii.
A releasable fastening element is provided for connecting the flap to the bottom edge of the inclined slot 20 so that one may pull one side of the flap away from the outer face of the outer layer Ill to open the slot so that ones hand may be easily engaged into the pocket formed by the outer layer It and the intermediate layer It. This releasable fastening element comprises a button 30 attached to the bottom edge of the vertical inclined slot 20 which is adapted to be passed through a button hole 3| formed in the flap l6 for holding the flap in its closed position and for providing a means by which the slot 20 may be opened to permit one's hands to be easily engaged therein. This flap may also be held closed by means of a snap fastener or other similar fastening elements.
A lining layer 32 for said garment is extended across the rear layer I5 and securely attached to the edges of the outer layer l0.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A pocket construction for garments comprising an outer layer of material for the garment and having a horizontal top opening, an intermediate layer of material behind said outer layer and attached at its top edge to the bottom edge of said top opening and attached at its sides and bottom to the inner face of the outer layer, a rear layer of material having its top edge attached to the top edge of said top opening and its sides and bottom to the inner face of the outer layer forming a main pocket, a flap for closing said top opening, releasable fastening means connecting the flap to the upper central portion of the outside of the pocket, said outer layer having a vertical inclined slot forming a mouth opening of an auxiliary pocket between said outer and intermediate layers, said inclined slot extending from the lower rear portion of the outside of the main pocket upwardly and forwardly past said fastening means to the upper central portion of the outside of the main pocket, said fastening means being secured to said outer layer of material near. the bottom edge of said inclined slot, so that one may pull the flap to separate the side edges of said inclined slot.
