This invention relates to drinking fountains, and its general object is to provide a fountain for watering poultry and stock, that not only supplies an ample amount of continuous running fresh water readily accessible for convenient drinking thereof, by both poultry and stock but provision is made in the construction of my fountain to take care or" the overflow and for carrying the came away from the premises in which the fountain is located, so that the floor or ground surface about the fountain is retained in a dry condition at all times, as such is desirable and essential from a sanitary standpoint, and especially with respect to chickens and like fo-wls, as they must be kept as dry as possible in order to maintain them in a healthy condition.
A further object is to provide. a drinking fountain of either a single or multiple form, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efficient in operation, use and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section of the fountain which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken through the water inlet connection for my fountain.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of the multiple form.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the form of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawing in detail, and particularly to the form of Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, it will be noted that it includes a hollow substantially cylindrical body I having open ends and exteriorly threaded for a portion of its length from said ends, to threadedly receive caps 2 and 3 for cooperation with the body to provide What may be termed an overflow well. The caps are laterally flanged to provide ground engaging and supporting members i. The body is provided with an opening disposed centrally of the upper portion thereof and is built up about the opening to provide a ring portion or collar 5 having a beveled upper end or rim 6 rounded inwardly for directing the overflow water within the Well as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 1.
The caps have threaded openings therein and threadedly mounted in the opening of the cap 3 for disposal therethrough, is a pipe section I having its inner end terminating below the overflow opening of the body and threaded on the inner end of the pipe is a T-coupling 8 having its right angled branch directed upwardly and centrally of the overflow opening. Threaded within the upwardly directed branch of the T-coupling 8 is the reduced threaded portion!) of a nipple formed on and depending from a cup ill, the latter being of semi-spherical formation and concentrically disposed with respect to the rim of the ring portion of the body, as best shown in Figure 1, and having'its upper end disposedfslightly above the ring portion. The branch of the T-coupling opposed to that connected to the pipe section 1 is closed by a plug ll.
The pipe section 1 is fixed to the cap 3 by lock nuts 12 and secured to the outer end thereof is a valve I3 for controlling the passage of water to the cup. The outer end of the valve has connected thereto a swivel coupling I 4, as best shown in Figure 4, for connecting a hose to the swiveled member thereof, for supplying water to thefountain from a suitable source, but of course it will be understood that a pipe may be provided for that purpose, when the fountain is to be permanently fixed.
Threaded in the opening of the cap 2 is an outlet coupling l5 for the connection of a. hose or pipe thereto, for draining the water from the fountain and to a place remote therefrom, so that the floor or ground about the fountain will be free from water and retained in a dry condition.
From the above description and disclosure in the drawing, it will be obvious that when the fountain is in connection with a suitable source of water supply and the valve I3 is in open position, the water will enter the fountain through the pipe section I for disposal in the cup ill which is of sufficient depth for holding an ample supply readily accessible for convenient drinking therefrom by both poultry and stock, and from the cup, the overflow water enters the well about they space between the cup and ring portion or collar 5, and thence is drained from the well through the outlet coupling I5. The course of travel of the water, as set forth is clearly shown by the arrows in Figure 1.
The multiple form of my fountain as shown in Figures 5 and 6, is similar in many respects to the form of Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, and the only difference between the two forms, is that the body 66 of the multiple form is of elongated cylindrical formation to make provision for a. plurality of water receiving cups I! which may be carried by a plurality of T-couplings connected together by short pipe sections or nipples. In any event, the water is supplied to each of the cups IT, and it will be obvious that the .form of Figures 5 and 6 is desirable where it is necessary to water a large quantity of poultry or stock. While I have illustrated the multiple form as including six cups, it will of course be understood that it may be made to include any number of cups.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A drinking fountain comprising a horizontally disposed hollow cylindrical body having open ends, caps closing said ends, flanges formed on the caps and extending laterally therefrom to provide ground receiving and supporting means for the fountain, said body and caps providing an overflow well and the body having an opening in the upper portion thereof, a collar formed on the body and rising therefrom about the opening, a pipe section secured to and extending through one of said caps, hollow water receiving and drinking means connected to the pipe section for disposal through the opening and collar in spaced relation with respect thereto to provide a passage for the overflow water from the drinking means into the well, an outlet coupling secured to the other cap and threaded to receive means for draining water from the well to a place remote from the fountain, and means for controlling the passage of water to the pipe section.
