Description

July 2, 1940. A. GRECO ET FORMER FOR GARMENTS HI I CLAUDE SJoRDA/v.
ANDY GRECO Filed March 11, 1939 Patented July 2, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Andy Green and Claude S. Jordan,
Califl, assignors to A. G. Jordan ing Company, a corporation of Culver City, Manufactur- California Application March 11, 1939, Serial No. 261,375 3 Claims. (01. 223-74) Our invention relates to improvements in formers for use with pressin important object of our inv machines, and an ention is to provide a simple and efiicient arrangement of this character which is readily adjustable for garments of different sizes and shapes Other important objects and arrangements of our invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration we have set forth of our invention.
In the drawing:
a preferred embodiment Figure 1 is a general vertical longitudinal sec- 'tional view taken through t he embodiment and showing the same in an expanded condition in full lines, and in a relatively contracted position in phantom lines, and illustrating the threepoint operative connection arrangement.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through Figure 1 approximately on the line 2-2 and looking downwardly in arrows.
the direction of the Figure 3 is a side elevational view of Figure l on a reduced scale.
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 approximately on the line direction of the arrows.
Referring in detail to the 4-4 and looking toward the right in the drawing, the former consists of the relatively stationary member 5, the relatively movable member 6, the relatively rigid rod I pivoted as indicated by the numeral 8 to the member 6 and as indicated by the numeral 9 to the member 5, the rodhaving a substantially right angular arm. Ill which terminates in an acutely angulated handle H, a scimitarshaped ratchet I2 being pivoted adjacent one end as indicated by the numeral IS on the arm Ill adjacent the part i I as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, these arrangements producing the three-point operative connections of the device. This ratchet I2 is provided with a handle part I3 as shown.
The member or section 5 is suitably constructed of wood and has the substantially semi-circular cross section exhibited in Fig ure 4, and where the device is adapted for sleeve forming this member will be longitudinally bowed as indicated in Figure 1 and provided at the handle end with an enlarged cross section part I d which has the crescent-shaped depression part of which is located the It across the upper ratchet stop or pin H with which the teeth It on the upper side of the ratchet l2 engage, the recess 16 providing sufficient room to swing the ratchet out of engagement with the stop ll. In addition to the described depressions the element 5 has the elon- 5 gated depression I9 in one end of which is an eye 20 anchoring the adjacent end of a contracting spring 2| to whose opposite end is connected a cable or cord 22 which is trained under and around a pulley 23 mounted in the end of the recess I9 opposite the eye 20, the free end of the cord or cable being connected as indicated by the numeral 24 to an intermediate part of the rod 7, the spring thereby having the effect of drawing the members 5 and 6 toward each other when the handle 18 is released by disengaging the teeth I8 of the ratchet I2 from the stop pin I'I. When the handle I! is pressed toward the member 5 this has the efiect of moving the member 6 away from the member 5, while movement of the handle I away from the member 5 has the efiect of contracting the member 6 toward the member 5 to a position such as is illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1. When the desired adjustment has been achieved, stretching the sleeve or the 25 like to the desired shape and tension, the ratchet i2 is swung to engagement with the stop pin I! so asto lock the sections 5 and 6 in their new positions. The movement of the sections 5 and 6 toward each other is positively assisted by the natural contraction of the spring 2| when the ratchet is released.
The section 6 has a substantially semi-circular cross section illustrated in Figure 4 and is in the case of a sleeve former, shorter than the section 5 and conforms generally in curvature and cross section, and has an appropriately formed recess 25 in the side facing the member 6 in which the pivot 8 is mounted to connect the outer end of the rod 1. As shown the members 5 and ii have their rounded sides turned laterally outwardly in opposite directions so as to properly engage the inside of opposite side portions of the sleeve being operated upon.
It will be understood that the sections 5 and 6 are to be of such length, cross section, and curvature as may be required for the forming of the particular garment or portion thereof, with which the device is to be used.
Although we have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be definitely understood that we do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials and in the structure and arrangement of the parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A garment forming device comprising a pair of substantially complementary sections arranged in side by side relation, a rod pivoted to an intermediate p-artof one section and. to a part adjacent one end of the. other section, thereby connecting the sections for lateral adjustment toward and away from each other, spring means for normally holding the parts with the two sections adjacent each other, a handle part extending at an angle from that end of the rod which is pivoted to said other section, for manipulating the rod to move the sections toward and away from each other and latch means for holding the rod in adjusted position.
2. A garment forming device comprising a pair of substantially complementary sections arranged in side by side relation, 2. rod pivoted to an intermediate part of one section and to a part adjiacent one end of the other section, thereby connecting the sections for lateral adjustment toward and away from each other, spring means connected to said rod for urging the rod toward one of the sections for contracting the sections toward each other, a handle part connected with that end of the rod which is pivoted to said other section and extending at an angle for manipulating the rod to adjust the sections toward and from each other, latch means connected with the handle and a keeper part on said other section for engagement by the latch, means for holding the parts in adjusted position.
3. A garment forming device comprising a pair oi substantially complementary sections arranged in side by side relation, a rod pivoted to an inter ediate part of one section and to a part adjac-ent one end of the other section, thereby conmeeting the sections for lateral adjustment toward and away from, each other, said rod having a handle beyond the pivotal point of connection of one end thereof with one of the sections, a ratchet lever pivoted on said handle, and a ratchet dog stationarily mounted on the last-mentioned section for releasable engagement by the ratchet lever to lock the sections in relatively adjusted relation.
