POSTING TRAY Filed Dec. 27, 1937 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented July 2, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POSTING TRAY Application December 2'7, 1937, Serial No. 181,791
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a posting tray, and particularly to a slidable cover for posting trays.
It is an object of this invention to provide a cover capable of protecting the contents of the tray when the tray is not being used and which may be slid out of way to expose the contents of the tray when desired. It is a further object of this invention to provide a cover that will remain in either closed or open position, that may readily be moved from one position to the other, that will not become separated from the tray and will not require an excessive amount of space to manipulate. It is a further object of this invention to provide a slidable cover that may be applied to any tray in a simple manner. Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a posting tray embodying the invention with the cover in closed position;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the cover in open position;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional View showing the structure for enabling the cover to he slid from one position to the other;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line IVIV of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a modified embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 2 indicates a stand adapted to support a posting tray 3. The stand includes four vertical legs 4, suitable reinforcing members 5, and a top member 5 upon which the posting tray rests. The stand is preferably provided with four casters 6.
The posting tray includes two upstanding side walls I connected by end walls 8. The end walls are each provided with a handle 9 to facilitate handling the posting tray. The walls I and 8 are provided at their upper edges with a ledge 10 to form a seat for the cover II. A pair of angular reinforcing members 12 extend above the covers where the rear end wall 8 is joined to the side walls '1 to facilitate positioning of the cover II on the ledge l0. The posting tray may be provided with any conventional compressor plate I3 to hold a plurality of sheets 14 against a follower plate. The interior structure of the posting tray is not part of the invention and, accordingly, will not be described in detail.
A plate 15 is secured to the rear edge of each side wall! and is spaced therefrom by means of a spacing block 16. The rear edge of each plate 15 projects beyond the rear edge of the tray and has a roller I! mounted near the top of the plate 15. The rollers I! are in alinement with each other and are spaced beyond the rear edge of the tray. The cover II is provided with an internally flanged guide channel I8 adjacent the lower edge of each side wall. The channels I8 are slightly longer than the cover and project beyond the rear edge of the cover. Each channel 18 embraces one roller H. The cover I l is provided with a handle [9 to facilitate lifting of the cover so that the cover may be manipulated easily. The plate l5 serves as a guide to prevent the cover from wobbling sideways when it is moved from one position to the other. As seen in Figure 2, the cover ll pivots on the rollers I! so as to lie adjacent the rear of the tray when in open position.
The embodiment illustrated in Figure 5 is similar to that hereinabove described except that the guide channels 20 are provided with outwardly extending flanges 21 which are received in a short channel member 22 pivoted, as indicated at 23, to the plate 15.
Although I have described two embodiments of my invention in considerable detail, it will be understood that the description is illustrative, rather than restrictive, as many details of the invention may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact structures described, except as limited by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a posting tray, a cover adapted to enclose the top of said tray to protect the contents thereof, a pair of guide channels secured to the lower edge of said cover and projecting beyond the rear edge of said cover, a plate secured to each side wall of said tray and projecting beyond the rear edge thereof, said guide channels being pivotally secured to said plates at a point spaced beyond the rear edge of said tray.
2. In a posting tray, a pair of plates secured to opposite side walls of said tray, said plates projecting beyond the rear edge of said tray, a roller secured to each of said plates beyond the rear edge of said tray, a cover member, and a pair of guide members secured to the outer surfaces of the opposite side walls of said cover member, each 50 of said guide members being slightly longer than said cover member, said guide members engaging said rollers to facilitate manipulation of said cover.
