Description

June 4, 1940. H. L. PEHRSON HANDLE FOR DRAWERS AND THE LIKE Filed Feb. 17, 1940 INVENTOR 1922223112 @0774 BY a! fi... ATTORNEY.
Patented June 4, 1940 HANDLE FOR DRAWERS AND THE LIKE Hem'y L. 'Pehrson, Rockford, IlL, assignor to Turner Brass Works, Sycamore, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application February 17, 1940, Serial No. 319,509
6 Claims.
The invention relates to a handle for drawers and the like, it being the general object of the invention to provide a new and improved handle of this kind.
Another object is to provide a new and improved metal handle with portions arranged to receive attaching screws and means for reenforcing such portions.
Another object is to provide a new and improved drawer handle formed of relatively thin sheet metal and provided with reenforced anchoring lugs for attaching screws.
Further objects will become readily apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a preferred form of the handle shown installed on the front of a drawer.
Fig. 2 is a front elevational View of the handle of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary section approximately along the line 4--4 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Although I have illustrated in the drawing and shall hereinafter describe in detail a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that I do not intend to limit the invention to the particular form shown, it being contemplated that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
As illustrated in the drawing, the invention comprises essentially a longitudinally curved or U-shaped member 5 formed from a relatively thin sheet metal blank. In addition to being curved from end to end the sheet metal is formed transversely to provide a handle of triangular cross-section, with an apex extending away from the drawer front l2 to which the handle is attached, as will be apparentv from the drawing. This member is narrower at its central portion 6 and has the edges of the sheet metal blank turned under as at 1 to provide a smooth pulling portion. A member [1 of plastic or other suitable material is secured to the mid-portion of the handle as by means of a screw IE to provide a gripping portion.
When formed in the manner indicated, the handle has pointed ends 8 and 9 with angularly disposed edges I0 and II located .in a common plane, as shown in Fig. 1, and intended to fit against the drawer front l2. Lugs l3 are struck inwardly from the edges I0 and provided with screw-threaded apertures l4 for receiving attaching screws l5. In order to reenforce the attaching lugs and provide a more rigid handle structure, opposed lugs l6 are struck inwardly from the edges l I and underlie the adjacent portions of the lugs l3. Thus, when the attaching screws iii are tightened to the condition shown in Fig. 4, the reenforcing lugs iii are positioned under the adjacent edges of the attaching lugs l3 and are thus clamped against the drawer 10 front l2.
The invention as disclosed herein provides a rigid handle structure and permits forming handles out of thin sheet metal. It has been found in practice that handles made in accordance with the disclosure herein and of sheet metal .025 inch thick, result in a rigid structure heretofore unattainable even with much thicker material. It is believed readily apparent that in the form shown and particularly as seen in Fig. 4 the lug l6 underlies and reenforces the free end of the lug l3. Without this reenforcing means an upward force on the handle as viewed in Fig. 4 would tend to cause the handle to fulcrum around the upper ends of the edges I0 and pull the lower edges of the handle away from the drawer front. By providing the end portions of handles with interlocking lugs as herein shown, it is possible to form a handle in a single piece construction and from thinner sheet metal than has heretofore been possible.
I claim as my invention:
1. A handle of the character described formed from sheet metal into a somewhat tubular member of triangularsection and curved to provide end portions adapted to be secured against a drawer front, a lug bent inwardly from one side of each end and each provided with a threaded opening for receiving an attaching screw and a second lug struck inwardly from another side of each end into a position tounderlie the free end of the first lug.
2. A handle for drawers or the like formed from sheet metal into a member having end portions adapted to be secured against a drawer front, a lug bent inwardly from one side of each end portion and provided with a threaded opening for an attaching screw, and a second lug bent inwardly from another side of each end into a position to underlie the free end of the first lug.
3. A handled the character described formed from thin sheet metal into a somewhat U-shaped tubular member having end portions provided' with opposed edges adapted to be secured against a drawer front, a lug bent inwardly from one edge of each end and adapted to receive an attaching means, and a second lug struck inwardly from another edge of each end into a position to underlie the free end of the first lug and reenforce the handle.
4. A handle for drawers and the like formed from sheet metal into a V-shaped section and curved so that the end portions thereof may be secured against a drawer front with the middle portion projecting from the drawer front, lugs bent inwardly from one edge of each end and adapted to receive an attaching means, and means interconnecting the free ends of said lugs with opposite edges of the ends efiective when the handle is attached to a drawer front to secure said opposite edges firmly to the drawer front.
5. A handle for drawers and the like formed from sheet 'metal and having and portions adapted to be secured against a drawer front, a lug bent inwardly from a side of each end portion and provided with an opening for an attach a ing screw, and a second lug bent inwardly from the edge of each end portion into a position to
