Description

y 1940- N. w. HIGGINBOTHAM I 2,202,582
BEDSPREAD ROLLER Filed July 19; 1938 INVENTOR.
NAOMI 'IV- HIGG/NBOTHA/Y/ FIG: 4
ATTORNEYS Patented May 28, 1940 UNITED STATES tATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to beds and more especially to means for rolling and unrolling the bedspreads thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and inexpensive bedspread roller of the character described.
Another object is to provide an efficient bedspread roller adapted to be readily attached to the mattress of a bed whereby the bedspread may be spread by a single operator from one side of the bed only.
Another object is to provide a novel bedspread roller that eliminates wrinkling and permits one side of the bed to remain against a wall and saves time in the daily task of making beds.
Other objects and advantages will appear and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanymaterial such as pipe, Celluloid, cardboard, wood or other material, the length of which is substantially that of the Width of the bed. A pair of spring steel tapes 6 are secured at one end to roller 5 and at the other to a pair of stiff iron formed clamps 1. A narrow iron spacing strap 8 is secured to the ends of tapes 6 and serves to keep the same parallel and space clamps I. A plurality of spring clamps 9 are secured at intervals along roller 5 and a cord II] is secured to roller 5 at its mid point, tothe free end of which is attached a hook H. A complementary member I2 comprising a rod substantially the same length as roller 5 is provided with a plurality of spring clamps l3, spaced at intervals along its length.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the above description and particularly as exemplified inFig. 4 which shows a bedspread A overlapped on a mattress B on bed C. In use the bedding is spread on the bed in the usual manner except for spread A. The clamps l are fitted snugly over the foot of mattress B. Spring tapes 6 are uncoiled and roller 5 unrolled-toward the head of the bed and the roller 5 is anchored by hook H secured at the head of mattress B. The bedspread A is now spread over the bed and secured to roller 5 under clamps 9 as will be apparent in Fig. 2, a portion.of the spread being folded back and secured in clamps iii of rod #2. The pillows are thereupon placed at the head of the bed over roller 5 and the free end of the spread secured to rod 12 is lifted over the pillows and concealed between themand the head of the bed. To roll the spread when the bed is to be used, the end of spread A and rod l2 are returnedto the position shown in Fig. 4 and unhooked from rod l2. Hook ll is thereupon released and the roller 5 is permitted to roll up the spread under the action of spring scription is illustrative and not restrictive of my invention and that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character described, com- 25 prising a roller adapted to extend across a bed, spring bands wound on said roller and having one end attached thereto, hooks carried by the opposite ends of the bands adapted to hook under a mattress, means carried by the roller for attaching the same to a mattress, and means carried by the roller for attaching a spread to the roller whereby, when the bands are unwound and the device applied to the mattress, the release of the roller attaching means will allow 35 the roller to roll on the mattress and wind the spread thereon.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a roller adapted to extend across a bed, spring bands wound on said roller and having one end attached thereto, hooks formed integral with the opposite ends of the bands and adapted to hook under a mattress, a cable attached to the roller and carrying a hook for attaching the same to the opposite end of the mattress, and a series of clips carried by the roller. and adapted to clasp a. spread thereon, whereby when the bands are unwound and the device applied to the mattress, the release of the roller attaching means will allow the roller to roll on the mattress and wind the spread thereon.
