M. C. DUCATI FURNITURE Filed Sept. 30, 193'? INVENTOR Macaw (2:44am fiaar/ Patented May 128, 19 40 STATES PATENT QFFECE Application September 30, 1937, Serial No. 166,539
, In Italy October 12, 1936 s 1 Claim.
of chairs and tables. vention relates to tables of the type adapted to receive the seat of a chair, and the knees of a 5 person sitting thereon, under the table in combination with the chairs designed for use therewith.
One of the major inconveniences to be met with wherever chairs and tables are used is the 10 necessity for moving the chairs for purposes of. cleaning or to 'make room for passage, or for other reasons. only an inconvenience to the person who is required to move it but also frequently results in damage to the chair and table or other furniture against which it may be accidentally struck in moving and to the floors which are scratched and marred by the frequent movement of chairs.
In dining halls and restaurants, in libraries, in
' conference rooms and in reading rooms and the like it is' usual when the room is cleaned to first lift all ofthe chairs onto the tables to get them out of the way for cleaning. This results ordinarily in serious damage to the tables and chairs and involves, moreover, an unnecessary waste of the time of employees in piling the chairs onto the tables and again replacing them under the tables.
It is an object of the present invention to avoid these inconveniences and losses in the use of tables and chairs and to provide a convenient means for the orderly positioning of chairs under or at the tables in such manner that they will not interfere with cleaning or with the passage of persons between the tables.
Another object of my invention is to effect the systematic ordering of chairs in relation to their respective tables in such a way as to have the maximum order and a minimum of space taken up by the chairs.
Another object is to provide a convenient outof-the-way location for chairs whereby to reduce the handling of the chairs and, therefore,
the losses to the chairs and other furniture.
In the accompanying drawing and following description I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention and various modifications thereof. These are not intended This moving of the-chair is not The present invention relates to a combination- More particularly the in-" to be exhaustive or limiting of the invention, but on the contrary are chosen and set forth with a view to instructing others skilled in the art so fully that they may be able to embody'my invention in numerous forms and with many other 5 modifications, each as may be best suited to the requirements of a particular use.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 -is a view in front elevation of a nested table and chair constructed according to my in- 10 vention;
Fig. 2 is a modified view of the table and chair shown in Fig. 1 with the table shown in cross section.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a chair with a back, 15 supported by its back in the brackets lib, which as shown, are screwed to the edge of the table. The chair is thus supported in substantially the same way that it would be picked up by one mov ing it. In some cases the bracket llb project- 20.
ing from the edge of the table may be objectionable and in such case grooves may be cutback into the edge of the table to receive the edge of the back 24 of the chair.
In Fig. 2, I have shown a similar arrangement, 25 except that in this case a third bracket He is secured to the under side of the table to engage the under side of the projecting edge We of the chair seat Hc.
It will be understood from these illustrations 30 and from what has been said above that my invention may be embodied in countless forms other than those shown in the drawing many of which will from the above be suggested at once to anyone skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
The combination with a table of a chair having a back having its side edges tapering downwardly inwardly toward the seat, said chair being substantially lower than the top of said table, 40
, and a pair of brackets on the edge. of said table set at a distance apart less than the broadest part of the back and engaging with the side edges of the back of said chair so as to support said chair in a nested position with the seat and legs withis in the open space underneath the table top and raised above the floor.
