Patented May 21, 1940 STILL FOR RE-REFINING USED CRANKC'ASE OILS William D. Harris, Kansas City, Mo, assignor to Refinoil Manufacturing Corporation, Kansas City, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Original application February 6, 1935, Serial No. 5,172. Divided and this application December 26, 1935, Serial No. 56,139
1 Claim.
My invention relates particularly to my copending application, Serial No. 5,172, filed February 6, 1935 of which this is a division. In that case apparatus is provided to practice a method of re-refining used crankcase oil by treating the oil with sulphuric acid, then heating the oil in a still from which the air has been exhausted in the vacuum thus produced, the diluents and light ends are distilled ofi as more fully described in United States Patents Nos. 1,707,672 and 1,820,871. I have found in practice that the boiling of the oil in process of distillation produces bubbles. These bubbles are a source of considerable annoyance for they contain oil and dilution or light ends of oil. Unless they are broken up, they carry oil, etc. over into the dilution tank and spoil the by-product thus obtained. If they are broken down, the oil which was in the bubbles, drops back into the still and only the vapor will reach the dilution tank.
My invention has. for its principal object to provide a construction for the still to be used in carrying out the process, described in the patents above referred to, which will effectually break any bubbles, which may be formed in the still, before they are carried to the'dilution tank.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which-- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved still;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the interior construction of the element; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed View of the bailles. Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, I have illustrated the still I, a condenser 2, a dilution tankB, a contact filter 4, with the suitable pipes connecting the same. The still I is constructed with double walls It and H, the inner wall ll being made to withstand high pressures. It is spaced from the outer wall 16 by means of suitable angles I2. I provide a dome It at the top of the still. This dome l3 has a heavy pipe !4 which is fitted to a flange !5 and is capped by a plate IS. A series of bafile plates formed by discs I! and rings 18 mounted in alternate layers on the pipe are arranged in the form of a cartridge. These plates are preferably carried by the plate l6 and serve to eifectually break any bubbles: which may be carried up to the dome and towards the lead to the dilution tank. They also serve a useful purpose in absorbing some of the heat in the vapor as it passes to the dilution tank. These. various tanks may be supported in any manner desired. As shown they are supported by a frame 20 which is provided with a platform 2! which supports the still I. Bands 22 are provided to hold the still firmly in place. The condenser 2 is held by means of bands 23 to one end wall of the still I,
substantially as shown. The dilution tank 3 is preferably supported on brackets 24. Bands 25 being provided to secure it to the brackets 24. The contact filter 4 is preferably supported on a platform 26 below the still I. It will be apparout to persons skilled in the art that these structural details may be varied as desired to meet operating conditions. Furthermore the specific details shown and described of the still are not to be deemed limitations but merely as illustrative of a preferred embodiment of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a still for heating oil, a dome at the top of said still, a pipe in said dome, a flange on one
