APPARATUS FOR ADDING EXTRACTS 0R THE] LIKE T0 SHQWER BATHS Filed Oct. 14, 1937 r MV Patented May 21, 1940 UNITED STATES APPARATUS FOR ADDING EXTRACTS R THE LIKE TO SHOWER BATHS Johannes Freng, Oslo, Norway applicati@ october 14, 1937, serial No. 169,059 In Norway October 14, 1936 4 Claims.
The present invention has for its object an apparatus, by means of which it is made possible in a simple manner to add extracts or the like in the desired quantity to the water sup- 5 plied to a shower bath, and in accordance with the invention the apparatus comprises a piston pump, the pressure conduit of which is adapted to be connected with the shower bath pipe in combination with an exchangeable vessel for the extract to be added, said vessel being connected in the operating position With the suction conduit of the pump.
The connection between the pump pressure conduit and the shower bath pipe may take place either by providing the pressure conduit with a piece of pipe adapted to be tted into the shower bath pipe so as to form a part of the same, or the pressure conduit may be connected with the interior of the shower bath pipe through a hole in the side wall thereof, the apparatus being adapted to be secured to the shower bath pipe in a suitable manner, such as by means of a clamp or a screw.
The hand-operated piston rod of the pump may be provided with a suitable weight, by means of which pressure may be exerted on the liquid in the pump cylinder after the pump piston has been raised, although this weight is not absolutely necessary, as the necessary pressure may also be exerted by hand so as to obtain the desired amount of extract.
On the drawing Figures 1 and 2'illustrate two different forms of the invention, the apparatus being shown in axial section.
On the embodiment illustrated on Figure 1,
I indicates a short piece of pipe which is provided at both ends with threads in order to be iitted into the shower bath pipe so as to form a part of the same.
The pipe section I is provided with a lateral extension 2, which is adapted to carry a pump 3 and an exchangeable Vessel 4 for extract.
The piston rod 5 of pump 3 is provided at the top with a handle 6, the weight of which may preferably be so determined as to exert the necessary pressure on the extract drawn into .the pump cylinder.
The extract is drawn into pumpl 3 from vessel 4 through intake valve l, and by the return stroke of the pump piston is pressed into pipe section I through pressure conduit 9. Said pressure conduit S, as indicated, is provided with a non-return valve Il), adapted to be completely closed by means of threaded spindle II. The passage of liquid from pump chamber into conduit 9 of Figure 1 takes place through opening 8 and the annular space surrounding pump cylinder 3, said annular space communicating at the top with conduit 9.
At its upper end pump cylinder 3 is connected 5 with the interior of vessel 4 by means of a return conduit I2.
In the form of the invention illustratedon Figure 2, the extension 2, through which the pressure conduit 9 of pump 3' passes, is adapted 10 to communicate with the interior of shower bath pipe I4 through a hole in the side wall thereof.
The member 2 may be secured to pipe I4 in any suitable manner, for instance as indicated on the drawing, by means of a flange I5 pressed 15 against the exterior surface of pipe I4 by means of a screw connection IB passing thro-ugh the pipe and engaging a threaded bore in a tubular extension I3, which forms a continuation of the pump pressure conduit 9 and passes into the 20 interior of the shower bath pipe I4 through a hole in the side wall thereof.
Apart from the connection with pipe I4 the form illustrated on Figure 2 differs from the one illustrated on Figure 1 solely therein that pump' 25 cylinder 3' is located on top of member 2', the suction conduit being made in the form of a pipe I extending downwards into theexchangeable vessel 4 for extract to a point nearer the bottom of the latter and communicating with 30 the vessel through hole I8.
The pump, as illustrated in Fig. 2, may also be connected with the shower bath pipe by means of screws passing through ange I5 and the pipe, and without the tubular extension I3. 35
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for adding extracts or the like to the water in shower baths, a pump cylinder, a anged member attached to said pump cylinder, a vessel containing said extracts and 40 attached to said flanged member, a tube extending from said anged member into said vessel, a passage through said member, a plunger as a part of said pump for exerting reciprocating manual pressure on the contents of the pump 45 cylinder, and two valves, one of said valves being seated intermediate said pump and the outer end of said tube extending into said vessel, and the other seated intermediate said pump and said shower bath pipe. 50
2. In an` apparatus for adding extracts or the like to the water in shower baths, a pump cylinder, a anged member connected to said pump cylinder, a vessel containing said extracts and attached to said flanged member, a tube extend- 55 1Q' pump cylinder, and two valves. one of said valves being seated intermediate said pump and the outer end of said tube extending into said vessel, and the other seated intermediate said pump and said shower bath pipe.
3. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said vessel is exchangeable.
4. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein a Weight is aflixed to the outer end of said plunger.
