The operation of the device is simple. On the downward movement of the rod 26, the yoke bar 25, the rods 23, the upper barrel 22, the stem 34 and the lower piston 36, the check valves 31 of the barrel 36 open, and the check valve 32 of the piston 22 opens. The liquid passes through the ports 39 of the barrel 22, into the barrel 22. On the upstroke, the valve 32 closes, and a quantity of liquid is trapped in the barrel 22, between the check valve 32 and the fixed piston I8 on the tube It of the outlet conduit l5. moves upwardly, and since the piston I8 is fixed, the liquid in the barrel 22 is forced upwardly through the outlet conduit IS, the check valve 2! opening to permit the upward and outward passage of the liquid through the conduit l5.
The device simplifies packing problems. It is easily assembled and taken down. The barrel 22 is doubly guided, because it slides on the ribs l2, and because the rods 23 slide in the partition l and in the cap 6, as well. The tapered lower end 28 of the barrel 22 facilitates the downward movement of the barrel, and causes the'water to enter rapidly through the ports 30. As to the final ejection of the water or other liquid through the conduit l5, that step in the operation does not depend upon a forcing action from the bottom of a well, but, rather, upon a combined lifting and forcing action taking place within the barrel 22.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A pump comprising a. cylinder, a top closure for the cylinder, means for securing the top closure to the cylinder, an outlet conduit fixed in the top closure and extended downwardly into the cylinder, the conduit being, provided'at its lower end with a fixed piston, a cup-shaped barrel receiving the piston and slidable thereon, the barrel Since the barrel 22* having a curved outer surface, a downwardly closing check valve in the lower portion of the barrel, more than two solid ribs on the interior of the cylinder and having, each, a single continuous surface engaged directly with the curved outer surface of the barrel to hold the barrel centered in the cylinder without interfering with the axial rotation of the barrel in the assembly of the pump, and an operating member slidable in the top closure and guided therein, to prevent the barrel from rotating with respect to the cylinder, after the top closure has been secured to the cylinder by the first specified means, the lower end of the operating member being connected to the 7 upper portion of the barrel.
2. A pump comprising a cylinder, a tubular housing disposed above the cylinder, a partition located between the upper end of the cylinder and the lower end of the housing, a barrel mounted for reciprocation in the cylinder, a downwardly closing check valve in the lower portion of the barrel, means extended upwardly through the housing for imparting reciprocation to the barrel; an outlet conduit comprising an upper member fixedly mounted in a portion of the housing, and a lower member detachably connected to the partition and to the upper member of the conduit, a piston on the lower member, the barrel being slidably mounted on the piston, a downwardly closing check valve controlling the conduit, and means for securing the housing, the cylinder and the partition detachably together.
