Description
NTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES S. BEACH, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
PRINTING-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES S. BEACH, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Printing- Presses; and do hereby declare that the Jfollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of rei-- erence marked thereon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The object of my invention is to dispense with the use of tapes in throwing` the sheet out from the impression cylinder of a printing press after it has received its impression. The accompanying drawings represent its application to an eight cylinder type revolving press, constructed for printing the sheet on both sides at one operation in accordance with the improvements patented by me in 1856.
Figure l, is a sectional view at the dotted red line a, o, in Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view at the dotted red line a, I) in Fig. l.
In both ligures A is a revolving core, the end O of which is attached to the central or type drum shaft and Bis a stationary box which covers the core A and is attached to the iframe of the press.
C is an open space or chamber between the inner side of the boX B and the end of the core A, and D is an open space or chamber in the core A which communicates with the chamber O.
E is an opening by which a supply of air is introduced under any suitable pressure, from an air pump or reservoir through the pipe (shown by red lines) F into the chambers O, and D.
d, d, are slit openings through the core A by means of which the air is allowed to escape from the chamber D such escape occurring only while these slit openings are 22,010, dated November 9, 1858.
passing the slit openings e, c. The eight slit openings e, c, conduct the air from the slits CZ, cl, into the eight pipes (shown by red lilies) Gr, Gr, and by these pipes it is conveyed through the shafts to a suitable point on the periphery of the eight impression cylinders, where it escapes finally through a series of small holes, and against one edge of the printed sheet and accomplishes the desired purpose by blowing the edge away from the cylinder and between a pair of tape rollers properly placed which draw off the entire sheet. The narrowness of the openings and the close fitting of the core A in the box B admit-s of a short, quick blast of air at the instant it is required and while the periphery of the impression cylinder moves but two or three inches, thus economizing the consumption of air while avoiding the inconvienences which might arise from a continued blast.
In the improvements of the printing press patented by me in 1856 the Sheet leaves the cylinder twice for every revolution of the type drum. Hence two slit openings cl, el instead of one. The same method of regulating the blast can be applied to type revolving presses having more or less than eight cylinders by increasing or diminishing the number of slit openings c, e, and pipes G, G. It can also be applied to Napier presses and also for other mechanical purposes, the core A in such cases being attached to any suitable shaft, wheel, or pulley. That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Froducing intermittent blasts of air by means of the revolving hollow core A having openings CZ, d and the stationary boX B, having openings e, e, arranged and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
M. S. BEACH. Witnesses JAMES G. COOPER, J. HILLANDER.
