SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 449,156, dated March 31, 1891. Application filed March 5, 1890. Serial Nol 342,7 '78. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. Goss, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Press Delivery Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan. Fig. 2 is a side view in section. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged det-ail, being a section at line el of Fig. 3.4 Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail and is a section 'at line 5 of Fig. 3.
My improvement is designed to be used in connection with a web-printing press; and its leading object is to provide improved devices by the use of which the web can be severed and divided into sheets, which I accomplish, as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents a web of paper.
B C are two cylinders provided with the ordinary devices in use for perforating the web at suitable intervals.
D are the upper tapes, and E are the lower tapes, between which the paper passes. These tapes are run over suitable rollers, as usual. Both sets of tapes pass over the rollers a and under 7c and the paper passes between the tapes.
F is a gear-wheel on a shaft G, supported in suitable bearings. This wheel is driven through intermediate wheels l-I I J, the wheel H being driven by the gear-wheel K on the shaft which carries the cylinder B.
On the shaft G there are two depending arms b c, which are secured to the shaft by means of collars and set-screws. To the lower ends of these arms b c there is secured a device L, consisting of two bars d c, between which there is a piece of rubber f, one edge of which projects below the bars cl c, which rubber is held in place between the bars CZ e by means of bolts g. This device L is secured to the arms b c by means of bolts h, which pass through slots in the arms b c, so that the device L can be adjusted a little vertically.
e' is a screw, there being one of these screws in connection with each arm b c. These screws can be adjusted, and they are arranged so that the upper edge of the device L will come in contact with them. The cylinder B and gear-wheel F rotate in unison. The tapes D E are to be timed so that they will run a little faster than the paper is unwound. Hence the tendency will be for the tapes to slide over the paper. The rubber clainpf projects be- 6o yond the gear-wheel F, and hence moves a little faster than such gear-wheel, the intention being to have the acting face of the clamp f move in unison with the tapes D E.
The operation is as follows: The paper as it passes from the web will be perforated by the rotation of the cylinders B C, and thus be partly divided iu-to sheets, but will not be entirely severed. With every rotation of the shaft G the rubber clamp fwill come intoV 7o juxtaposition with the rollers c and will press the tapes and the paperbetween them against the rollers a with some force, and for the nioment the tapes and that part of the paper which is held by the rubber clamp f will move at the same speed and the strain on the paper at the point Zwhere it was perforated will be sufficient to tear the web apart at such point.' Thus the web will be separated into sheets. As the cylinders B C and 8o the gear-wheel E and shaft G rotate in uni'- son, the rubber clamp f will come in contact with the upper tapes once with every revolution of the shaft G and at the proper time to cause the web to be fully severed by the strain S5 thereon.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with perforating-cylinders,tapes for carrying a web forward, and 9o means for acceleratingthe speed of the tapes, of a shaft rotating in unison with the perforating-cylinders, a rotating roller over which j the tapes and web pass, and a clamp pro-- jecting from and rotating with the shaft and provided with an acting face, which at intervals as the clamp rotates presses all the tapes and the web upon the rotating roller for causing the web to travel with the clamp at the accelerated speed of the tapes, which roo are pressed by suoli clamp on the rotating roller, substantially as described.
The combination, in a press delivery apparatus, of tapes for carrying a web forward,
