DAVID E. TI'ISWORTH, OF PLAIN FIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE POTTER PRINTING'PRESS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR SEVERING ROLLED WEBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,121, dated'J'uly 2, 1895. Application filed January 24. 1895. seatin 536,086- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID E. TITSWORTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plain field, county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Severing Rolled Webs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to printingpresses, and is especially designed for use in multiple web-presses, although not limited thereto.
In presses which use a plurality of rolled Webs it is often desirable or necessary to print from one of such webs a series of half or supplement sheetsas, for instance, in producing six or ten page papers; but it is inconvenient to keep for such purpose rolled webs of half width or size.
It is the object of myinvention to enable a series of half sheets to be printed from a roll of the usual full width, leaving intact theremainder of the roll, which latter may subsequently be used for the production of a fur- With such I object. in view, I combine with the web-supporting means a severing device adapted to act directly upon the surface of the roll and to cut or partially cut through one or more thicknesses or layers of the web. Imay thus divide the roll at any desired placefor instance in the middleleading away one portion of the web thus separated to be printed in the form of a series of half sheets, as .above mentioned, while the remainder of the roll 'is kept from unwindingand intact byany suitable meansfor instance, by pasting down the free end of the web.
In order that the severing device may perform the abovefunction, it is so located and actuated that its cutting-edge is contained in a plane which is at right angles to. its axis, and all parts of the severing device or cutter lie in or' behind said plane-that is to say, in said plane or at that side of it away from the intact portion of the roll. When the device is in operation, this plane is coincident with the plane of the end of the intactportion of the roll.
I prefer to construct and use the severing device in such manner that it shall cut or partially cut through several layers of the'webg. so that in case the web shall break sufficientof the same can be unwound from the roll to be introduced or threaded into or through the feed devices or printing mechanism, thereby enabling the press to be again started and the printing process renewed.
It will be understood that my invention can be employed either by itself or in connection with a printing-press, or in connection with any other suitable machine for the purpose of severing a rolled web, leading off a portion thereof and'leaving in its rolled condition another portionof the web.
Such being the general nature of my in vention, in order to make it more clearly understood I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying it into practical effect, withoutlimiting myimprovements in their useful applications to the particular construction, which for the sake of illustration I have delineated.
In said drawings, Figure l is an elevation of so much of aprinting-press embodying my invention as, is necessary for the understanding of the latter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly in section, a portion of the press and web-rolls being broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line III III, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the frame of the press, which latter is, in the instance illustrated, of the multiple web type.
' 2 is the web-roll supporting-frame.
3 is the inking apparatus.
4 is the shaft of the distributing-roll, and 5 a portion of its actuating gearing, driven in any usual or preferred manner, and 6 and 7 indicate the upper and lower web-rolls in .place for use, from which the upper and lower webs 8 and 9 are led to the printing mechanism (not shown) over guide-rolls 10 and-11.
12 indicates the severing device, which is constructed and mounted in combination with the web-supporting means in such manner as to act directly upon one of the web-rolls before the web has been unwound therefrom. I
out departing from my invention, I prefer that shown in the drawings, in which 13 is a cutter drivingshaft mounted on bearingbrackets 14, carried by the frame 2. The shaft 13 is driven from the power mechanism of the press, as by a sprocket-pinion 15, actuated by a chain 16 from a sprocket-wheel 17 on the shaft 4.
18 is a movable orswinging frame, adapted at its free end to move toward and from the axis of the web-r0116, and journaled on the shaft 13. Said swinging frame carries a cutter-shaft 19, on which is fixed a sprocket-pinion 20, driven at suitable speed by a chain 21, from a sprocket-wheel 22 on the shaft 13.
The severing device 12 is a cutter of any suitable form mounted on the shaft 19. As shown, it consists of a disk formed at its edge with sharp serrations or teeth adapted to cut wholly or partially through one or more layers of the web. The said teeth or the cuttingedge of the disk are or is set outward, so as to be capable of acting in a plane coincident with the end face 23 of the intact portion of the web-roll, (Fig. 3,) thus obtaining clearance for its inward movement.
24 24 are rolls, wheels, or stops, carried by the frame 18 and preferably on and rotary with the shaft 19, the function of which is to limit the depth of cut of the severing device 12. They perform such function by bearing upon the surface of that portion of the webroll which is being consumed, being caused by gravity or otherwise to follow said surface inward toward the axis of the roll as the radius of the latter decreases. They thus maintain the cutter-shaft and severing apparatus at a uniform distance from the surface of the web-roll and keep the cutter-shaft level.
The severing device may be thrown out of operation by lifting the frame 18, with or without removing the chain 16. The frame 18 is laterally adjustable on the shaft13, in order to set the severing device in the desired plane of cut, the said frame being confined between collars 25, which may be fixed to or loosened from the shaft by set-screws 26. The sprocket 22 may be correspondingly adjusted by a set-screw 27.
It willbe understoodthat the invention-may be applied to the severing of a web-roll of more than full widthfor instance, a Web of full sheet width may be cut from a roll having a width of three half sheets.
I claim- 1. In a printing press the combination, with the web-roll supporting means, of a severring device acting directly on the surface of the web-roll to sever or partially sever the web before it is unwound, said severing device having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the severing device lying in or behind said plane, substantially as set forth. 2. In a printing press the combination, with a plurality of web-roll supports, of a severing device acting directly on the surface of one of said rolls before the web is unwound therefrom, said severing device having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the severing device lying in or behind said plane, substantially as set forth.
3. In a printing press the combination, with the web-roll supports, of a frame movable toward and from the axis of the web-roll, and a severing device carried by said frame and adapted to act on the rolled web, said severing device having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the severing device lying in or behind said plane, substantially as set forth.
4. In a printing press the combination, with the web-roll supports, of a frame movable toward and from the axis of the web-roll, a rotarysevering device carried by said frame, said severing device having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the severing device lying in or behind said plane, and means for rotating said severing device, substantially as set forth.
5. In a printing press the combination, with suitable supports for a web-roll, of a swinging frame movable toward and from the axis of the web-roll, a cutter shaft-in said frame, a cutter carried by said shaft, said cutter having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the cutter lying in or behind said plane and means for maintaining said shaft at a uniform distance from the surface of the web'roll, substantially as set forth.
6. In a printing press the combination with the web-roll supporting frame, of hearings on the said frame, a driving shaft in said bearings, means for driving said shaft from the power mechanism of the press, and a cutter actuated by said shaft and acting on the surface of the roll before the web is unwound, said cutter having its cutting edge contained in a plane which is at right angles to its axis and all parts of the cutter lyingin or behind said plane, substantially as set forth.
7. In a web feeding and severing machine the combination, with a roll supporting device, of a cutter located so as to make a peripheral cut around the roll and means acting simultaneously with the cutter for leading off the paper from one part of the roll while leaving the paper on the other part in its rolled condition.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
