3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in hair curling devices and has particular reference to a combination comb and curler. I
An object of the invention is to provide an improved device of simple and practical construction wherein a member is utilized, in combination with a comb, as a mandrel upon which a curl is formed.
Another object is to employ a member which forms a housing for a comb and is associated therewith in such manner that said elements will have relative movements that will permit the comb to be recessed within the housing and projected therefrom to a position wherein the comb will cooperate with the housing in the formation of a curl.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the curler device, with the comb housing in one position of adjustment wherein the comb employed in con i; junction with the housing is recessed therein.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the housing adjusted so that a portion of the comb will be projected therefrom into cooperative relation with the housing to constitute a mandrel about which a strand of hair is curled.
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the device in the position of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figures 6 and '7 are views similar to Figure 5 showing the progressive steps in the formation of a curl.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the numeral 8 indicates an ordinary comb from one end of the back of which there extends a rod generally indicated by the numeral 9. The inner portion Ml of said rod adjacent the comb back is circular in cross section while the outer portion ii is flat with the exception of the reduced extremity l2 thereof. Said portion H is provided on opposed edges thereof with rows of comb teeth l3 for a purpose which will later appear.
Associated with the rod 9 is a member M of substantially semi-circular cross section. This member performs the three-fold function of providing a handle for the large comb, a housing for the small comb l3 and a mandrel about which 1939, Serial in. 281.761 (01. 132-45) 21. curl is formed. The member or housing M includes the end walls iii and it and an intermediate wall ll, said walls i5 and ll having a bearing on the portion ill of the rod 9 which extends therethrough and the end wall it likewise having a bearing on the reduced extension E2 of said rod. The intermediate wall I! divides the housing into two compartments l8 and 19, the latter of which is adapted to receive the portion ii of the rod and the teeth l3 which con- '10 stitute the small comb which cooperates with the housing M in the formation of a curl. By so mounting the member M on the rod, the two elements are capable of relative rotary movements and the member M, being slightly shorter than the rod d is also capable of longitudinal movements relative thereto. The portion of the partition ll surrounding the opening through which the rod 9 extends is provided with a series of four notches 23 equi-distant about said opening and any one of these notches is adapted to receive a detent 2! formed on an adjacent portion of the rod 8 and as a lateral extension of one of the end teeth it. When said detent is engaged in any one of the said notches, relative 5 rotary movements between the rod 9 and the housing Hi are prevented. The detent 2! is yield ably held in a notch 2i] by means of a spring 22 coiled about the circular portion ill of said rod 9 and interposed between the partition I! and a pin 23 which extends transversely through the portion Ill and abuts the end wall l5 of the housing. Said end wall I5 is spaced slightly from the adjacent end of the comb body 8 so as to permit a sufficient longitudinal movement of 5 the housing Hi along the rod 9 and toward said comb 8 to permit the withdrawal of the detent 2! from the engaged notch, said movement being against the tension of the spring 22. When the detent is so withdrawn, a relative movement between the housing i l and rod 9 may be effected whereby said housing may be adjusted from the position of Figure 1 to that of Figure 2, or vice versa. After being adjusted from one position to another, the detent H is again aligned with one of the notches 2B and a release of pressure upon the housing M will permit the spring 22 to force said housing outwardly upon the rod 9, and thereupon engage said detent in the aligned notch to releasably retain the housing in its 5 adjusted position.
In the position of Figure l, the comb I3 is in inoperative position wherein it is recessed within the compartment 1 9, as is illustrated in Figure 7,
and the housing I i may then be employed as a handle for manipulating the large comb 8. When it is desired to form a curl, a relative movement between the housing l4 and rod 9 is efiected as above described, and said housing may be adjusted to the position of Figures 2, 4, 5 and 6 in which one of the series of comb teeth I3 is projected laterally through the open side of the housing l4. The operator may then employ the projecting teeth l3, as in Figure 5, to initially comb out a strand of hair 24 and, after this has been done, said strand may be wound about the housing l4 and the comb teeth I3, as shown in Figure 6. With the curl thus formed about said elements, which then combine to constitute a mandrel, the comb I3 is then restored to the position of Figures 1 and 7 to free the teeth of the comb from the strand, after which the curl may be slipped off from the housing M to complete the operation.
90 What is claimed is:
1. In a hain curler, a rod having comb teeth thereon, a housing of semi-circular formation in cross section and having a bearing on said rod for providing relative rotary adjustments between said parts, said housing having an open side through which said teeth project in one position of adjustment and which receive said teeth therein in another position of adjustment, spaced notches formed in a wall of said housing, and a detent on said rod movable into said notches to releasably retain said teeth in their difierent positions of adjustment.
2. In a hair curler, a rod having comb teeth thereon, a housing through which said rod extends, there being relative rotary and longitudinal movements between said rod and housing and the teeth on said rod combining with said housing to form a mandrel about which a curl is formed when a relative rotary movement is effected to project said teeth from said housing, said teeth being also movable into a recessed position within said housing, notches formed in a wall of said housing, and a detent on said rod movable into said notches during a relative longitudinal movement between said rod and housing to releasably retain said teeth in their projected and recessed positions.
3. In a hair curler, a rod having comb teeth thereon, a housing having an open side and an intermediate wall through which said rod extends, there being relative rotary and longitudinal movements 'between said housing and rod and said teeth being projected from said open side and recessed within said housing during said rotary movements, notches formed in said intermediate wall, a detent on said rod movable into and out of said notches when relative longitudinal movements between said housing and rod are eifected, and a spring for yieldably maintaining said detent within any one of said notches.
