I 2,195,904 TILED WALL AND TILE THEREFOR Charles J. Stanley, Chicago, 111., and John T. Welch, Dowagiac, Mich.v
Application January 27, 1939, Serial No. 253,044
15 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in tiled wall and tile therefor. I
The main objects of this invention are: 7
First, to provide a tiled wall which is well adapted for use in atmospheres of high humidity and where it is necessary to frequently wash or I clean the wall.
a follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in-the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invent1on 1s illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
. which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the foundation. and the improved tile in its relation to the foundation or the improved wall structure.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the embodiment illustrated of the improved tile, the fasteners being conventionally shown.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary inverted perspective view of the face plate or panel of the tile.
Fig. '5 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the body or backing for the tile.
Referring to the drawing, I is the foundation panel for supporting the tile, this foundation being preferably formed of waterproof composition or fiberboard and is secured to the studding 2 or other suitable support. The waterproofing is of substantial importance in securing a wall which panels 4 which may be square or of otherdesired configuration, depending upon. the shape, size or disposition of the surface tobe covered and also as to the tile design. These face plates are, in the embodiment illustrated, molded of artificial or urea formaldehyde groups and have rearwardly (01. 72-19) projecting edge or border flanges 5 which serve to stiffen the relatively thin face portion of the plate and also provide retaining means for the backing.
The flanges are provided with undercut or inwardly beveled lugs .6 at spaced intervals adapted asretaining parts or members for the backing.
For convenience in manufacture and assembling, the backing of the embodiment illustrated is made up of outer sections 1 and an intermediate or key section 8, the outer sections having beveled edges 9 engageablewith the undercut lugs 6 by a lateral sliding movement of the sections 1. The section 8 which is in effect a key section is arranged between the sections I and locks them in engagement with the retaining lugs.
Strips of adhesive tape I arranged over the joints between the sections 7 and 8 retain the section 8 in position. These backing sections are also formed .of waterproofed fiberboard.
To secure the tile in position upon the foundation, Iprovide a plurality of rotatable drive screw fasteners I I, these fasteners being secured to the tile backing by means of clips I2 which areseated in recesses 33 provided therefor in the backing members I or the backing members which have interlocking engagement with the face plate of the tile.
The clips I2 have holes-I4 receiving the fasteners I l, the heads of'the fasteners being arranged on the inner sides of the clips. The clips are provided with fastening prongs I which are clinched in the backing members as indicated at I6 thereby rotatably securing the fasteners to the tile.
The holes 3 of the foundation and the fasteners I are spaced to correspond or so that in assembling the tile upon the foundation, the tile may be secured merely by registering the fasteners with the holes and forcing or driving them into the holes of the foundation. I
The backing preferably projects somewhat to the rear of the edges of the flanges of the face plate as shown in Fig. 3 which permits the plastic joint filler I1 filling into the rear of the flanges. This joint material is not relied upon to secure the tile in place but it does serve to prevent the entrance of moisture and also it gives the appearance of a cement mounted tile.
The adhesive strips I0 serve as an effective means for holding the sectional backing members in position and does not prevent the tile lying fiat against-the foundation.
The improved tile is very inexpensive both in the matter of material and assembly of the tile and the mounting of the tile on the wall may be done by relatively inexperienced workmen. While the face plates of the tile are preferably formed of molded plastic, certain features of the invention are adaptable to face plates formed of other materials. Molded plastic, however, has very great advantages in that it can be produced in a great variety of colors and the colors may be accordingly matched should occasion for replacement be required and the individual tile as well as the wall itself is very attractive. It is not affected by moisture.
We have illustrated and described our improvements in an embodiment which we consider highly practical.
