' To all whom it may concern.'
v for fastening lli ' out, thereby loosening the Be it hewn that ll, Teano W. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State oi Ohio, have invented certain new and usetul improvements in Moldings and Metal Fasteners, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to molding and metal fasteners for sashes and windowpanes. The putty which is now being used windowfpanes in the rabbets ot sashes dries and then crumbles and tells ane which will eventually tall out, there y necessitating there-glazing oi' the sashes. llt is the object ot the present invention to provide a tastening means which will overcome these disadvantages by providing an improved molding and metal fastening strip avoiding the use of putty and at the same time retaining all oil its advantages. Another object oi' the invention is to provide a water-prooi tastener oil this nature which is securely held in place and the bottom is prevented from buckling or otherwise becoming distorted.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve upon molding and metal fasteners ot this nature by providin a device which will be extremely simple an edicient in construction, reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features ot construction, and the combination and arrangement ot parts as will be hereinafter more tally described and claimed.
While the design and construction at present illustrated, as set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result ci a reduction of the invention to a more practical form lor commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible of changes, and the right to these changes is claimed provided they are comprehended within the scope of the invention of what is claimed.
Tn the drawing Figure l is a section through a portion of a window sash showing the improved molding and fastening strip as applied holding the pane oi' glass in position, and
Figure 2 is a perspective thereof.
Serial No. Elhotl.
be noted that l designates a window sash as a whole, and 2 denotes the pane of glass mounted therein. The pane of glass 2 is mounted so that its edge is situated in the recess 3 and abutting the shoulder d. Se-l cured to the face ot the recess 3 is a metal strip comprising the body d which has enmnded trom one edge a dan` 5 which ertends at an acute angle :troni t e bottom 'lace thereof. This ange 5 rests upon the bottom of the recess 3 and the body d inclines upwardly from the edge thereof toward the pane of glass 2. The other edge ot the od d is provided with a dange 6 substantial y Ll-shaped in cross section so as to torna a pocket that receives a dexible strip l termed from rubber or some such other similar material. This exible strip 7 entends beyond the body el resting against the window pane and prevents moisture and air troni penetrating between the strip and the window pane. This strip is held in place by nails or screws or othersimilar penetrating devices 8 which pierce the body 4ladjacent the outer edge thereof and also the dange 5, thereby causing a wedging ed'ect whereloythe strip 7 may be fastened tightly and tirmly in engagement with the windowpane 2 holding it rmly in place. llt will also be noted that by having the dan seated on the recess 3 and held in position y the fastening devices 8 any warping or distortion or the strip will be compensated for l. Tn a window pane fastener, a body portion, a flange extending at an acute angle to a tace of said portion from one edge thereof, a second flange extending trom the other edge ot the body portion so as to underlie the tace thereof which is at an acute angle to the first mentioned dange and extending toward the rst mentioned llange, said last mentioned dange being substantially ll-shaped in cross section for receiving a dexible strip, both of said danges being turned over so as to be disposed on the same side of the body portion.
2. ll'n combination, a window sash including a rail having a recess and a window pane resting in said recess, a fastening strip disposed in lthe recess including an inclined body portion, a dange formed on the bottom edge thereof and reistin uponvthe bottom of ythe recess being dispose et an acute angle to 'the under surface of the body portion, a
flexible strip supported onl the other edge of `the'fastening strip and enga. 'n the window ane, and means piercing t 'e j y and the an e of the fastening strip and driven into the ottom o f the recess whereby the exible strip-ma, be held inrirmfzengagement with fthe win ow P9316.:
3. In combination,l a sash including a window pane, vstening device mounted one rail of the sa'Sh end including an inclined body portion having a, flange extending at en ecute angle thereto on its loweedge andseated upon the mil, and a U-shaped flange extendingfrom its other end and underlying its under surface, a exible stri fitted into 'said U-shaped flange and gearing against said window pane, and means piercing the body and first mentioned flange of thefastening stri and driven into the rail whereby the flexib estrip may be held firmly ugainst'the window pane.
