I COMBINATION COMB AND BRUSH Filed July 6, 1938 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 26, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 10 Claims.
The present invention is directed to a composite hair treating device comprising hair combing means and disconnectably associated hair brushing means, and the objects, advantages, and features thereof, will be considered in the followin detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a View in perspective of the composite hair treating device, showing the brush in an assembled relation with the hair combing means.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 illustrating the brush attached to the comb and the swingable latch in a locked relation.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 wherein the brush is disassembled from the comb and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. 1
Illustrative of the embodiment disclosed, the hair treating device comprises, the combination of a comb 9 and a brush Ill. According to the invention, the brush may be readily connected and disconnected from the comb. For this purpose, shank I I of the comb is provided at one end with a reentrant notch I2 and the overhanging shoulder I3. The shank is also provided with a transversely disposed opening I4 lined by the fixed and hollow bushing or metal ferrule I5 having upset annular ends I6 constituting means to prevent removal of the ferrule from opening I4.
The brush ID embodies a twisted wire constituting spaced arms II carrying the bristles I8. In the assembled relation of the brush and comb, the arms I! of the brush straddle shank II while the intermediate portions of I9 of the inner bristles I8 abut the side walls of the shank while the upper portions 20 of these inner bristles extend above the shank and the lower portions 2I of these bristles mesh with the teeth 22 of the comb. I
The spaced arms I! are integrally interconnected at one end by a transversely disposed portion 23 constituting with the spaced arms I! a U shaped loop comprising inwardly bent terminals or ends 24 adapted to be received in the ,fixed socket or ferrule I5. after portion 23 has been located within notch I2 under lip I3.
Having properly positioned the loop of the brush in respect to the comb, such desired relation is maintained in the utilization of the swingable locking latch generally denoted 25 which is provided with an eye or bearing 26 rotatably sustained on one arm I1 of the loop. This locking latch 25 is also characterized by an arcuate ball 21 provided with a terminal lip 28 cooperating with a companion arm II of the resilient twisted wire loop to prevent accidental unlocking of the latch.
With the swingable latch held in a locked relation in respect to the wired loop, arms II are prevented from spreading to preclude accidental removal of the inwardly bent ends 24 from the ferrule. -Where the brush is disconnected from the comb as shown in Fig. 3, these parts may be readily assembled. In this connection the comb is first interposed between arms II of the brush. Thereafter the closed end 23 of the loop is moved under lip I3 and into notch I2. Subsequently arms I! of the loop are moved towards each other and the ends 24 are automatically shifted into the hollow ferrule I 5.
Pursuant to this operation latch 25 is rotated to permit the bail thereof to straddle shank II of the comb. When however lip 28 strikes one of the arms II, it resiliently snaps under the latter and the normal tendency for the arms I! to separate sets up a certain outward thrust against lip 28 to prevent the latter from being accidentally disconnected from its companion arm of the loop.
Thus by the present arrangement, it is apparcut that the hair treating device accomplishes a double function during stroking thereof through the hair, namely, combing and brushing.
When it is desired to remove the brush from the comb, an upward finger thrust is applied under lip 28 on the part of the operator. This action causes lip 28 to snap over a companion end I! of the loop. Hence-latch 21 is opened and thereafter is swung or pivoted to clear and be free of the comb and upon the release of manual pressure from the sides of the brush, the offset ends 24 of the loop simultaneously move outwardly to be free of ferrule I5. Thereafter the comb may be readily removed from the loop as is well understood.
In the broadest aspects of the invention, I do not desire to be understood as limiting its embodiment to details herein shown illustratively as a wide variety of modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
