Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo GEORGE ABRAMS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CRANKA SCREW-DRIVERS.
Speciiication formingpart of Letters Patent N0. 219,425, dated September 9, 1879 application led July 31, 1879.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ABRAMS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Crank Screw- Drivers, of which the following is a speciication.
The drawing is a side view of my improved implement, partly in section, to show the con struction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved scrcw.- driver or brace which shall be so constructed as to force the screws in and out quickly, which may be readily held in place in theslot of the screw-head, and which may be used in any place where an ordinary screwdriver can be used.
The invention consists in a crank screwdriver or brace formed of the shaft having a revolving handle placed upon it, and provided at its outer end with a small crank and at its forward end with a socket'to receive a bit, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a small crankwhich is made with a pivoted knob or handle, and is formed upon or rigidly attached to the end of a straight shaft, B. Upon the shaft B is pivcted a handle, O, and to its lower end is attached, or upon it is formed, a socket, D, to receive the shank of a small screw-driver or bit, E. With this construction the bit E is exactly in line with the shaft B and handle O, so that it is easily held in the slot of the screw and kept from slipping out and marring the object into which the screw is to be driven, or from which it is to be withdrawn, while the crank A allows the screw to be turned in or out rapidly.
If desired, the screw-driving hit E may be detached and replaced with a boringbit, so that the same implement may be used for formin g the holes to receive t-he screws and for forcing` the screws into the holes.
Havingthus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A crank screwdriver or brace formed of the shaft B, having a revolving handle, O., placed upon it, and provided at its outer end with a small crank, A, and at its forward end with'a socket, D, to receive a bit, E, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE ABRAMS.
