Description

GARMENT HANGER Filed Dec. 5, 1938 /4- 76 W" W- w INVENTOR. I
fifiY'c/d far? M772 A TTORNEYS.
Patented Mar. 12, 1940 TES OFFICE 3 Claims.
-This invention relates to an extensible, pendant hanger, which may be used for many different purposes, but is particularly well adapted for use to support at various heights horizontally extending bars or rods suitable for supporting garments and other fabrics either directly or by ineansof clothes hangers.
Speaking more specifically, the invention pertains to an improved combination of an elongated stationary pendant member with an elongated member adjustably mountable upon said stationary member, thus providing means for conveniently and dependably adjusting the combined length of the two members, the upper member being attachable to a main overhead support and the lower end portion of the lower member being attachable to a variety of objects, for example, to an end portion of a horizontally extending rod onto which may be hooked conventional garment hangers.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simplified member having a series of shoulders to cooperate with a member having a part which answers the purpose of a pawl to cooperate with said shoulders to afford the adjustable feature above mentioned.
The device may be manufactured at a very low cost as its main parts can be rapidly stamped out by dies, or fashioned by wire shaping machinery.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide improved means to guide the part answering to a pawl or dog into place under the hooks or shoulders with which it cooperates.
The invention also relates to a new article of manufacture in that it provides an elongated hanger member having a series of shoulders or hook elements spaced longitudinally therealong, said shoulders being adapted to cooperate with various wire loops or hooks suited to coact with them to make up a complete, extensible hanger construction.
Other objects advantages and features of the invention may hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention,
a Fig. l is a side elevation of the device looking at one face thereof.
Fig.2 is an elevation viewing the device at a right angle to the showing of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to thedrawing, the hanger consists of two elongated members ill and II which occupy a pendant, overlapping position when the device is in use, the lower member ID being vertically movable to various adjusted positions in relation to the stationary member H whereby it is supported. Said member H has an elongated guide opening or slot l2 extending along its mid-width portion, one edge of said slot being shaped to form a series of longitudinally spaced, hook-like shoulders i3 and the opposite edge of said slot being so shaped as to provide a corresponding spaced series of cams M which are positioned to guide a suitable hook element occupying said slot into an underlying position in relation to the shoulder selected therefor. In the drawing, this hook element is shown as the looped upper end it of the wire ll of which the particular upperhanger element shown is composed, but it is to be understood that said shoulders of the upper hanger member are adapted to cooperate with various hanger hooks, wire loops, and the like that it may be desired to use in conjunction with them.
Said wire ll is shown formed into a, continuous loop having two mated limbs or runs which have a deflected Ll shaped bend it formed inv them at their lower end gripping the horizontal lower bar 20 under the urge of a clamping bolt .2! which passes between the two runs of the wire and which is furnished with washers 22 and 23 and with a nut M to enable it to perform its function. Each limb or run of the wire i1 is in a parallel, closely spaced relation to the other, apertured means shown as spacing loops 33 being used to secure this result. Said loops at are carried by the strip H and project from opposite faces thereof. By preference and as shown said loops 30 arein one piece. They guide the wire member in its movement from one adjusted position to another and also keep it alined with the strip H. When the looped wire ll is moved downwardly along the slot its upper end portion is deflected byeach cam edge 14 into a position superjacent to the next shoulder or seat therebelow. f g
The upper end portion 35 of the strip H is shown twisted through an angle of ninety degrees in order to bring it into a proper angular relation to the upper supporting bar 36. This part of the strip H is hooked around said bar and may beclamped thereto by means of the bolt 3? and therealong. Each portion of said slot which is shouldered as has already been stated, is directed at an acute angle to the direction of the length of the slot in order safely to hold the strip H and wire I in definite adjusted relations to each other.
The washers 23 may be shaped as plates having deflected end portions 231:: to aid in holding the wire in place. There is also shown a broadly U-shaped spacer plate 45 through which the bolt 2| passes, this plate safeguarding against distortion of the Wire when the nut 23 is screwed down.
The slotted member 5 9 together with its keeper loops 30, will not necessarily be made of sheet metal, but may consist either in part or wholly, of wire shaped in such a manner as to provide shoulder elements for the purpose specified.
I claim:
1. In an extensible hanger of the kind described, a flat strip of substantially rigid sheet material having through it a longitudinal slot of a zig-zag character, there being longitudinally spaced bent portions of said slot which are directed at an acute angle to the direction of the length of the slot thereby forming acutely angular shoulders, a wire hanger element having a looped end portion extending loosely through said slot and slidable therealong, and means carried by said wire hanger member to support garments.
2. The subject matter of claim 1 and, said fiat strip being furnished with suspending means at one end and with a combined keeper and guide for said wire at its opposite end portion. 3. In an extensible hanger of the kind described, a strip of substantially rigid sheet material having through it a longitudinal slot of a zig-zag character, there being spaced bent portions of said slot which are directed at an acute angle to the direction of the length of the slot thereby forming acutely angular shoulders, a wire hanger element having a looped end portion extending loosely through said slot and slidable therealong, said wire having substantially parallel runs which normally overlie the opposite faces of said strip, suspending means with which one end portion of said strip is connected, and a pair of keeper loops carried by the opposite end portion of said strip, one of said loops projecting from one face of said strip and the other from the opposite face thereof, one run of said wire pass ing slidably through one of said loops and the other run of said wire passing slidably through the other of said loops.
