UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. DEU FREE, OF GLENWOOD, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 [9,231, dated September 2, 1879; application filled- May 26, 1879.
ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and operation of a gate-hinge adapted to allow the gate to be swung either side of its supporting-post, in order to open from the operator, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a gate, closed, and its posts, showing the location and position of my hinge. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the same through line ax, the gate being open and swung round tothe outside of the hinge-post and Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section of my invention, illustrating its construction and relative position of its several parts.
A A represent two ordinary gate-posts, respectively, the one sustaining the hinge, and the other provided with a rest-hook, y. This post A is formed with a suitable recess, a, in its inner face, in which is placed and secured in a vertical position, bymeans of bolts, screws, or their equivalents, the plate F. This plate F is provided with loops or links, H H, fastened in horizontal positions, or thereabout, one above the other, and extending out therefrom, and a short distance beyond both sides of the post A, with a space between them sufficient for the reception of a traversing axle, G, where said axle is retained by an upright shaft or bolt, E, passing within the inner walls of the said loops or links H H, and through an eye formed on the inner end of the same.
The other or outer end of this axle G is provided with a screw-threaded portion, 9, and a correspondingly-threaded nut, I, for retaining wheel D in its place.
Over this traversing axle G is placed a bushing or collar, h, with annular flange i, upon which collar h is fitted the wheel D. This wheel D has a circumferential groove, D.
The gate B is mounted upon the wheel D, and is held on the same by the rails O O, which enter the aforesaid groove D.
One end of the gate, when closed, rests upon the hook y. I
To open this gate, raise it from the hook I slide it back of post A'a short distance, and then turn it as desired, and at the same time the axle G will travel between loops or links H H, and permit wheel D to swing round to either side of post A, carrying with it the gate. 0 is a stop, which comesin contact with post A when the gate is swung round in one direction.
It is obvious my hinge may be constructed with only one loop or link, H, by making the same broad enough to sustain the strain thrown upon bolt E.
The plate F may be cast in one piece with the loops or links H H.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The plate F, provided with loops H H, bolt E, axle G, and grooved wheel D, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, in a gate and hinge, of the gate B, supporting-post A, and the plate F, bolt E, axle G, and grooved wheel D, as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of May, 1879. p 1
