direct and mesne assignments, to Herbert Morley, Grosse Pointe, Mich., and Theodore R. Bush, Royal Oak, Mich., jointly I Application June 18, 1938, Serial No. 214,515
'7 Claims.
Another object or the invention is to provide a door closer with a new and improved form of checking device for slowing down the closing movement of the door just before the end of its travel.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following speci'fication, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, of which there is one sheet and wherein:
Fig.1 is a'plan view of the device embodying the invention, shown applied to a door;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in a plane along the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3-is a horizontal section taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a developed view of the cam. Referring to Fig. 1, there is shown a door closer l0, shown applied to a' door for closing the same, the door being indicated at I2, and the wall or casing upon which the door I2 is hung being indicated at I4. The closer I!) may be secured to the wall M, such as by means of a pair of screws 16. The door closer includes a linkage'device comprising a pair of arms l8 and 20, pivotally connected together at 22, the arm being pivotally connected to the door 12 by a' bracket 24, and the arm l8 being connected to a shaft 26 of the closing device. The door closer and'check consists, as illustrated in Fig. 2, of a body member 28, providing a cylinder and closed by a cap or end plate 38 secured thereto, such as by means of screws 32. The end plate 30 may be provided with a flanged portion 34, provided with apertures 36, by means of which the screws l6 may secure the door closer to the wall I4. The screws 32 may pass through suitable openings in the cover 30 and be threaded into tapped holes pro vided in the wall of the body member 28.
The body member 28 provides a cylinder in which there is arranged a spring 38, the end body member 28, a cam surface 48, and the shaft 26, which projects through an aperture in the cover 30. The arm I8 is connected by means of a bolt 56 to a clamp 52 and also by means of a bolt 54, directly to the shaft 26, so that upon movement of the arm about the center of the shaft as a pivot, the shaft 26 and cam 46 will rotate. The clamp 52 may be secured to the shaft 26 by means of a pair of bolts 58. A gland 60 may be formed between the cam 46 and the cover 30 so as to prevent the escape of fluid from. the cylinder 62.
The body member 28 may be formed to provide a second cylinder 64 of smaller diameter than the cylinder 62 and in which a piston 66 is reciprocable. The piston 66 is formed to include a valve, so as to pass fluid into the cyl- L inder 64 upon upward movement of the piston. The valve and valve passageway comprise a passageway 68, provided in the connecting rod 70 of the piston, a valve seat 12, a'valve member M, which closes the valve seat, a valve spring l6, which biases the Valve member 14 to its seat,
an apertured retainer 18, which forms a seat for the valve spring 16, and a leather cup 86, which provides a face for the piston 66. A spring 82 biases the piston 66 upwardly. The cylinder 64 is provided with an outlet 86, the size of which is controlled by a metering pin 88, provided on the end of a threaded plug'90, adjustable in a tapped hole provided in the body member 28 and closed by the bolt 94. The end of the piston rod 10 engages a lever 96 pivoted at 98 by a pin to a lug Illll carried by a removable portion I02 of the body member 28, the portion I02 being removably secured to. the body member by bolts I64. The lever 96 may include a roller or sleeve I66 which rolls upon or engages the cam face 48 of the cam 46.
Upon opening movement of the door, the lug 44 winds up the spring 38, the cam 46 being rotated in a clockwise direction, looking at Fig.. 1, by the opening movement of the door. Fig. 2 shows the relationship of the parts when the door is partially open. Upon opening movement of the door, the cam face 48 permits the lever 96 and the piston 66 to rise, whereupon liquid by-passes the piston 66 into the cylinder 64. The spring 38 operates to return the door to a closed position and actsthrough the intermediary of lug 44, cam 46, and linkage I8, 20 and 24. The cam surface 48 preferably is located so that, for example, when the door is within. twenty degrees of closing, the cam will engage the roller I66 and, through lever 96, force the piston 66 downwardly in the cylinder 64 so as to displace oil therefrom. The outlet 86 from the cylinder 64 is of such size as to restrict the flow of oil from the cylinder 64 and thereby check the closing movement of the door. The piston is forced downwardly by the cam face 58 until the door is within one or two degrees of closing, when the fiat $9 on the cam permits the spring 38 to close the door without any further check.
Due to the adjustable connection between the arm 53 and the shaft 26, the relation of the cam face it to the closing position of the door may be varied so as to check the door at any desired position. Further, by changing the design of the cam face M, the checking action of the door may be modified. The regulation of the size of the outlet 86 from the cylinder 6% would also vary the checking action. The liquid used in the cylinders 6t and 62 preferably stands at a level close to the top thereoifiso as to insure the filling of the cylinder 84, and this oil may be of such viscosity and character as to be substantially unaffected by changes in temperature due to changes in seasons, f
The piston 52 3 and cylinder 5 1 form a dashpot, which functions to check closing movement of; the door.
While the invention has been described with some detail, it is to be understood that the description is for the purpose of illustration only and is not definitive of the limits of the inventive idea. The right is reserved to make such changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will fall within the purview of the attached claims.
