It is an object of my invention to provide a hair clipping device of simple construction where- It is va'vfurther object of my invention to provide a clipper construction which will permit convenient removal of the cutting blades for sterilizing or sharpening.
It is a still further object of my invention to provide such a construction'which is adaptable to either manuallyl operated hair clippers or powerdriven clippers.

Referring more particularly to Figs. '1 through 7, I provide a stationary supporting arm or handie I5, which terminates at its lower end in an integral substantially cylindrical housing I6 which contains a helical spring I1 adapted to work. against al shoulder I8 near the lower end 'of the movable handle I9. The housing I6 has a forward longitudinalextension provided with a horizontal transverse slot 2I. The lower iiange formed by said slot has an outer edge which extends downwardly and backwardly, as shown at 22, for a reason to be described later on. g
A stationary cutting blade 23 is formed with a horizontal extension 24 on its rear edge which tical section of the structure shown inFig. 8 as 1 is adapted tot intothe slot 2| in the extension r 20 of the cylindricalhousing I6. The forward edge of vthe stationary cutting blade is provided with a series of cutting teeth 25, which are of the conventional type.- f.
A movable cutting blade 26 restsupon the stationary blade 23 and is provided with cutting teeth 2'I similar to the teeth 25. The movable blade has a slot 28 provided longitudinally* of spaced relation in thelower part o f said slot. A' slide member 30 is slidably positioned within the slot and rests upon the shoulders 29 and a screwI 3l is provided with its head resting. within said slide member and its lower portion threaded into the central portion of the stationary blade 23 and terminating above the loweriface of said stationary blade. A pair of upstanding guide lugs 32 are formed on the upper side of the stationary blade to co-operate with slots 33 in the under face of the movable blade. It will be noted that the stationary blade has a. relatively wide depressed area`23'a to provide sliding bearing `surfaces for the movable blade at its front and its medial portion withshoulders 29 in opposed formed inmember 38, provided with an integral wing head 39, extends downwardly through the cap plate 31, the sleeve-like bearing 34, the upper portions of the extension and through an aperture in the rearwardly extending portion 24 of the stationary blade. It will be noted in Fig. 3 that that portion of the bolt extending into the extension'20 is threaded therein, and that there is a smaller smooth surfaced end on the bolt 38 which tsinto the aperture in the stationary blade. It will also be noted that this bolt 38 does not extend through to the under face of the 'extension 20 which is ush with the under face of the stationary blade 23. Thus it will be seen that there are no screw or bolt hoies in the bottom face of the stationary blade 23 or in the under face of the lateral extension of the cylindrical housing I6 which can catch the ends of hairs and pull them. Attention is also called tov the downwardly and backwardly extending lower edge of the cylindrical housing extension 20 and the edge of similar shape at the lower rear portion of the stationary blade. Because of the slant givento this joint, it is impossible for any hairs to becaught therein.
When it is desired to remove the blade members 23 and 28, it is only necessary to unscrew the bolt 38 until its lower 4extended portion has been withdrawn from' engagement with the extension 24 on the stationary blade. The two blades may then be removed as a unit for steriliz-` ing, and if' it is desired to sharpen Athe blades, after they have been removed from the clippers, the small bolt 3| may be removed and the two blades will fall apart.
In the modification shown in Figs. 8 through 14, I have provided a construction in which the stationary blade 40 forms the entire lower face of the clippers, and, as in the embodiment above handles or supporting arms, I have shown generv ally a rectangular bracket'member or supporting arm 4I of a type which is generally utilized in power driven clippers. The lower end oi this supporting arm is bent downwardly and then outwardly in a horizontal position, as shown at 42, and is provided with an aperture positioned centrally of said horizontal portion and another pair of apertures toward the ends of said horlzontal portion. 'I'his horizontal portion is adapted to slide beneath the upstanding retaining. member 43 formed on'the rear of thempper side of the stationary blade 48.
The movable blade 44 rests upon the stationary blade and is provided at its rear edge with a downward extension 45 adapted to ride in the channel 48 formed in the upper face of the'stationary blade. To properly tension the movable blade relative tothe stationary blade a substantially U-shaped spring member 41 is provided and is secured to the upstanding retaining member 43 by bolts 48 which extend through said retaining member and through the horizontal portion of the supporting'arm 4| terminating in threaded engagement with the stationary blade 48 above the lower face of said blade. The spring 41 is arched slightly, as shown best in Fig. 9, andits forward edge 48'is,turned downwardly to engage the' transverse groove 60 in the upper face.

2 and 3, extends through said cap plate, vertical bearing 55, the upstanding portion 43 at the rear of the stationary blade, the central aperture in the horizontal extension 59 formed integral with -the housing 53 and is threaded into the rear portion oi the stationary blade 40 terminating above the lower face of saidblade.
From the foregoing description, it will be vseen that I have provided an improved construction f or hair .clippers wherein the removal of the two cutting blades is an extremely simple operation whichrequires very'little time. In addition, I
have provided a construction wherein the under faceof the stationary blade is .free of any lbolt holes or crevices which mightl'catch and pullthe hair. l'
I have alsoprovided one form oi construction wherein the cap plate is formed integral with the stationary cutting arm, thus reducing the number of separate parts. y v
In that construction`which relates to a type adaptable ilorV either power driven or manually operated clippers, I have provided an arrangement whereby the cutting blades and tensiming spring may be removed as a unit.
In connection with those views showing the supporting arm 4i adaptable for use with power driven clippers, the supporting arm may be formed substantially at right angles to the blade structure' and the lower i'ace of the-stationary blade vmay be given a convex shape., 'I'his variation is suggested to adapt the clippers .for use by the operator in clipping his own hair, and the dedeparting from the scope of my invention, which.' generally stated, consists in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, and in the novel parts and combinations of partsl disclosed and defined in the claims.
What is claimed is: K
1. A hair clipping device. comprising a blade supporting element, a blade assembly comprising a pair. of blades slidably and detachably inter- -connected as a unit, said supporting element and one of said blades beingprovided with a tongue and'slot connectionv lyingin a horizontal plane and'beingv of substantial width 'and a Vretainln'g element extending through-said tongue and slot connection to rigidly anchor the blade unit to said-supporting element.
2. A hair clipping device comprising a blade supporting element having a horizontally positioned slot extendinginwardly throughout its edge and said element also having an aperture extending vertically throughv said slotted portion, 75
20 said tongue and slot connection to secure the a pair or slidable blades detachably interconnected as a unit, one of said blades including a horizontally positioned tongue element extending outwardly from the rear edge of said blade and adapted to fit in said slotted portion of said supporting element, said tongue having an aperture therethrough in alignment with the aperture through said slotted portion, and a retaining element extending through the aperture in said slotted portion and said tongue.

A hair clipping device comprising a blade supporting element having a horizontally positioned tongue extending outwardly from an end thereof, a pair of relatively slidable blades detachably connected together as a unit, one of said blades having a horizontally positioned slot extending inwardly from an edge thereof and coextensive with a major portion of said edge, said blade also having an aperture extending vertically through said slotted portion, said tongue being adapted to fit the slot in said blade and having an aperture therethrough in alignment with the aperture through said slotted portion,
and a removable retaining element extending through the aperture in the slotted portion of said blade and through said tongue.
