3 Claims.
This invention relates to ticket books provided with a plurality of leaves which are each subdivided to provide a retained record stub and i a detachable coupon section, the latter having a 5 tongue portion upon which is carried an initially concealed inscription; said leaves being so bound into the book that the inscription on the detachable coupon sections. are initially invisible and are not intended to be disclosed until the tongue portions bearing the same are withdrawn from the binding by detachment of the coupon sections. i
In ticket books of the kind above mentioned, as
, heretofore provided, it has been found that after a certain number of the coupon sections and their tongue portions have been detached. and Withdrawn from the book, it is possible to so manipulate the book that the inscription on the tongue portion of an undetached coupon section,
which is intended to beconcealed until after the coupon section is detached, may be rendered visible before such detachment. This is done by inserting a pencil, or like leverage exerting instrument, beneath the bound portion of the cover, and thereupon utilizing the same as a lever to transversely flex this portion of the cover and also, to some extent, the butt portions of the remainingleaves, to thereby pry apart these portions suificiently to permit sight of the inscription otherwise concealed. It is an object of this invention to provide, in a ticket book of the kind mentioned, additional guard means calculated to prevent manipulations of thekind described or other undesired manipulations likely to permit visibility and disclosure of the concealed inscriptions prior to the detachment and withdrawal of a coupon section with which it is associated.
Other objects of thisinvention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be understood from the following detailed description of plane of a guard means element with which the book isprovided; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section 56 through the ticket in open condition, and show- (o1. es -4;)
ing the condition of the same after some of the coupon sections have been withdrawn, and the relation of the guard means element to the remaining butt portions of the leaves from which the coupon sections have been detached; and 5 Fig. 6 is a transverse section, taken on line 5--6 in Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference are employed in the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, each leaf of the book comprises a butt portion ill, integral with which, for outward extension therefrom, is record stub section ii and a detachable coupon section i2. Integral with the inner end of the detachable coupon section it is an inwardly projecting tongue portion it which indents the body of the butt portion ill. The record stub section ii may be provided for the entry thereupon of such record data as are desired. The coupon section it may have printed thereonsuch descriptive matter as is desired, and on the extreme end of the tongue portion i3 is printed the inscription id desired to be initially concealed. To hold the coupon section 92 and its tongue portion I3 25 initially secured to the butt portion) and the associated record stub section II, the leaves are provided with scores or interrupted slits l5 intermediate these parts, integral coupling necks it which retain the parts together being provided so, in the lines of said slits. By the latter arrangement, when an outward pulling strain is exerted upon the coupon section 52 and its tongue portion it, the coupling necks it will part thus detaching' the coupon section 52 for removal with 35 accompanying outwardwithdrawal of the tongue portion 93 thereof, whereupon the concealed inscription borne by the latter portion will be dis closed to the possessor of the thus detached coupon section. 40
' In making up the ticket book a desired number of leaves, characterized as above described, are arranged in superimposed registered relation, the total number of leaves is subdivided into groups of a selected number so as to form the same into piles of minor thickness, and interposed between these piles and guard members of relatively heavy and tough sheet material, such e. g. as. comparatively heavy paper. The guard members each comprise a guard portion ll to register with the butt portions It of the book leaves and a detachable spacer portion 18 to register with and lie between the outer portion of the leaves comprising the record stub and detachable coupon sections H and I2. A scored or torn away and detached when desired.
The book leaves with suitably interposed guard members are arranged between top and bottom cover members 20 and 2!, and thereupon bound together and between said 'cover members by -1 minals of said tongue portions.
clinched binding staples which are passed through the butt-portions of the thus assembled book parts. In preferred arrangement a pair of longitudinally spaced staples 22 are positioned more or less parallel and adjacent to the upperlongitudinal margins of the tongue portions idwhich indent the butt portions N3 of the leaves; and in like manner a second pair of longitudinally spaced staples 23 are positioned more or less parallel and adjacent to the lower longitudinal margins of said tongue portions; while a transversely disposed staple 524 is positioned adiacent to the ter- This arrangement and disposition of the staples 22, 23 and 12 i firmly secures the butt portions of the leaves, guard members and cover members together and in bound relation, While leaving the tongue portions l3 free to break away and withdraw from the leaf butt portions when the detachable coupon sections are torn away and withdrawn endwise from, the book. 1
When the coupon sections of the upper pile of book leaves have been detached and withdrawn so as to expose an underlying guard member, the spacer portion E8 of the latter is torn away to expose the ticket-leaves of the underlying pile thereof. As the coupon sections of the latter pile are successively detached and withdrawn, the overlying guard portion l! effectively prevents the insertion of a leverage instrumentality between the butt portion of the upper cover portion and the remaining book leaves, or between said guard portion H'itself and said remaining book leaves, in an attempt to pry up and flex either of the same sufficiently to permit sight of the inscription of the tongue portion of the exposed coupon section prior to the detachment of the latter. I i i It will be obvious that the number of guard members employed in a given book will depend more or less upon the thickness of the book, in other words, upon the total number of leaves included in the book. For best results the total number of book leaves will be divided into a plurality of relatively thin piles separated one from 65 the other by the interposed guard members.
and an outlying extension. subdivided to provide a non-detachable record stub section and a detachable coupon section having an inwardly projecting concealed inscription bearing tongue portion indenting said butt portion, said leaves being arranged in segregated groups, guard means of comparatively stiff sheet material interposed between the leaf butt portions of said groups, cover means enclosing said leaves, and binding staples engaged through the inner end portions of said cover means and through said leaf butt portions and guard means in surrounding but outwardly offset relation to theinscription bearing tongue portions which indent said leaf butt portions.
