Description

Feb. 6, 1940. A. E. COLLIS SMOKING PIPE REAMER Filed Sept. 17, 1938 INVENTQR AZberZ' E. Callas WITNESSES ATTORNEYS main as shown in Fig. 2 but may be easily swung over to the position shown in Fig. 1.
Instead of having a triangular shaped stem 5, a round stem 5' could be used, as shown in Fig. 7, and a keyway 15 provided into which the end of a set screw I6 projects. present instance acts as a key and the groove or keyway I5 acts as a guide whereby the carrier 1 may freely slide but must rotate with the stem or plunger 5'. Also the knob 6 could be formed with a fiat end 6', as shown in Fig. 8, and merging into a hollow extension I! having a slot l8 whereby it could fit over the end of the stem and over a suitable gear or lug so that by properly rotating the member 62 the stem will be rotated. It will therefore be seen that the knob 6 may be found and knurled, as shown in Fig.1, or may be flat and held inplace in any desired manner either permanently or removably.

l. A smoking pipe reamer comprising a stem triangular in cross section, a turning member at one end of said stem, a ball at the other end of said stem, a sliding member mounted to slide back and forth along said stem, said sliding member having a triangular-shaped aperture for accommodating said stem whereby said sliding member may freely slide back and forth on said stem and rotate therewith, and a plurality of spaced reaming jaws pivotally mounted at one end on said sliding member, said ball having a notch for each of said jaws for guiding the jaws as they are moved by said sliding member, the pivotal mounting of said jaws being radially farther from the center of said stem than the bottom of the notches insaid ball whereby as said sliding members moves away from said ball the outer ends of said jaws will swing radially away from each other.
This set screw in the 2. A smoking pipe reamer comprising a stem, a spreading member at one end provided with spaced notches, a member mounted to slide on said stem but to turn therewith, a reamer jaw for each of said notches, and means for pivotally mounting one end of each of said jaws to said member radially farther from the center of said stem than the bottom of said notches whereby said jaws will swing inwardly and outwardly as said member slides backand forth on said stem.
3. A'smoking pipe reamer comprising a stem polygonal in cross section, a carrier slidingly mounted on said stem and rotatable therewith, said carrier having a plurality of radially extending arms, a jaw for each of said arms, means for pivotally connecting one end of the respective jaws to the respective arms, means at one end of said stem for guiding said jaws and causing the same to spread when moved in one direction and permitting the same to swing so that the outer ends will be substantially in contact when moved in the opposite direction, and a thumb-actuated member carried by said stem for rotating the stem, the carrier and the jaws.
4. A smoking 'pipe re'amer comprising a stem triangular shaped in cross section, a thumb member arranged at one end of said stem for rotating the same, a notched ball arranged at the other end of said stem, a carrier slidingly mounted on said stem and rotatable therewith, and a jaw pivotally connected to said carrier for each of said notches in said ball, said jaws being arranged to fit into said notches, the bottom of the notches being closer to the axis of said stem than the pivotal mounting of the jaws whereby the free ends of the jaws will be swung outwardly as the carrier is slid toward said thumb member.
