CHIMNEY-CAP.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,884, dated October 26, 1858.

To all whom 'ii may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNHARD KrHLHoLZ, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Machine for Preventing Chimneys from Smoking, to which I have given the name Chimney Smoke- Regulator; and I de hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2 a perspective view ofl a section.

The lower part of the said machine forms a cover (see F ig. l, A) with a pipe in its center (see Fig. I, B) of about six inches in diameter and about a half of a foot in length, which cover is to be made suitable to any size of the top of a chimney and to be put on the same; the upper part forms a joint of a pipe (see Fig. 2, A), suitable to the pipe on the said cover, of about six inches in diameter and of about a foot and a half in length with a flange in shape of a funnel (see Fig. 2, B) measuring about eight inches in diameter, fastened around the latter pipe about an inch from its top, which latter is covered by a cap (see Fig. 2, C) in shape harmonizing with the above described flange but about a half of an inch smaller in circumference, resting on three holders supported by said flange. The edge of this cap is in one line with the edge of the top of the pipe. The said cap and flangeare inclosed in a cylinder (see Fig. l, C), which is about a half of an inch larger in circumference than said flange andas high as to inclose the said flange and cap about a half of an inch above the edge of the cap and below the edge of the flange, resting on three holders, fastened on the pipe below said flange.

This machine prevents the wind from blowing the smoke back into chimneys and rooms. The cylinder, it will be seen, shelters the cap and flange, and the smoke-pipe is again sheltered by the cap above and by the flange below, so that the wind will pass the so protected smoke-pipe without being able to penetrate into the interior and drive the smoke down the chimney. The cap being smaller than the flange the wind will on the contrary promote the discharge of the smoke.

That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The above described chimney smoke-regulator consisting of the pipe F, deflector E and cap I) inclosed in cylinder C, attached to cover A, the whole constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
