IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,738, dated August 19, 1879; application filed February 8, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MAX HERMANN, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Holes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The general object of this invention is to very easily and cheaply produce, in linen collars, cuffs, and other articles of woven fabrics, button-holes having the end or ends of each very strongly barred by a novel arrangement of stitches that are of the same kind as and are continuations of the series of over-edge stitches which bind the side edges of the button-hole; and to this end my invention consists in a button-hole having the two side series of over-edge stitches extended across each other, and obliquely across the line of direction of the button-hole, in the fabric, at and beyond the end or ends of the button-hole, substantially as hereinafter described.

In the aforesaid drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent enlarged side views of tab ends of collars having therein my improved buttonholes; and Figs. 4 and 5 are like views of similar tabs, each having a half-worked button-hole of the kind shown in Fig. 1.

A and B are the two series of over-edge stitches which bind the side edges of the button-hole C, and which are each extended, as at A B, in the fabric D, at and beyond the end or ends of the button-hole, and across each other at a'considerable angle, and also obliquely across the line of the lengthwise direction of the button-hole.

In Figs. 1 and 3 both ends of the buttonhole are barred by the lapping or crossing extensions A B of the two side series of over-edge stitches A B; but in Fig. 2 only one end of the button-hole is thus barred.

In this invention the end parts, A B, of the series of stitches can lap or cross each other to a greater or less extent, and in various directions, and can extend obliquely across the line of the length of the button-hole at various inclinations thereto, as indicated in the accompanying drawings.

In carrying out this invention the stitches of the two end extended series A A and B B are to be of any of the several suitable known over-edge kinds heretofore used in working button-holes, and are to be made, preferably, by the use of any suitable known sewing-machine, or button-hole attachment in connection with a sewing-machine. I sometimes prefer, however, in making these improved buttonholes, to use what is known as the Julius Gutmann two-needle sewing-machine, patented in the United States in the yea 1869.

I am aware that the ends of button-holes have been heretofore barred by extending the side series of over-edge stitches into the fabric at, beyond, around, and across the ends of the button-holes in various ways, but notby extending the two side series, A B, of over-edge stitches across each other, and obliquely across the direction of the length of the button-hole in the fabric, at and beyond the end of the button-hole, as represented at A B in Figs. 1, 2, or 3 of the aforesaid drawings, whereby the end of the button-hole is barred with remarkably great strength in a very simple and easy manner.

What I claim as my invention is A button-hole having the two side series of over-edge stitches extended across each. other, and obliquely across the direction of its length, in the fabric, at and beyond the end or ends of the button hole, substantially as hereinbefore described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
