Description

Jan. 16, 1940.. F. E. WHITE VALVED CAP FOR CONTAINERS Filed March 2:, 1939 .Fre Whi Te Patented Jan. 16, 1940 UNITED STATES VALVED CAP FOR CONTAINERS Fred E. White,
Application March 23,
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to caps for containers of tooth paste and'the like; and its object is to provide such a cap improved in various respects hereinafter appearing; and more par ticularly, to provide such a cap having a discharge opening and an improved valve for closing the same and improved means for operating the valve.
This and any other and more specific objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the illustrative structures particularly described in the body of this specification'and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a valved cap for the vent of a container of tooth paste or the like, and a portion of such a container showing the cap applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a like view thereof but showing the same with the caps valve opened by a tooth brush for applying the tooth paste thereto;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view 01 th same taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the cap;
Figure 5 is an axially sectional view of the cap and container taken on line 5-5 of Figures 3 and 4;
Figure 6 is a view, similar to Figure 5, with the valve in open position;
Figure 7 is another axially sectional view of the cap and container takenon line l--l of Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a side view 01' the cap and container showing a modified construction for connecting the cap with the container;
Figures 9, and 11 are views of the cap and container showing another modified construction of the cap, Figure 9 being an axially sectional view, Figure 10 a transverse sectional view taken on line Ill-40 of Figure 9, and Figure 11 being another axially sectional view taken on line l|--li of Figure 9.
As illustrated by this drawing a cap, for a con tainer (as a collapsible tube i) for toothpaste or the like is detachably applied to the containers nipple 2 through which its vent 3 extends, in any suitable way as by screwing the threaded nipple into the caps, discharge opening 4 communicating with the vent, in the constructions illustrated by Figures 1-7 and 9-11, or by means of the caps bayonet slot 5 in which th nipples pin or lug 6 engagesas shown in Figure 8. Said cap has a body 1 in Figures 1-8 or I in Figures 9-11 having a slide bearing 8 or 8 comprising parallel grooves, in which the valve 9 or 9 is slidable to the position shown in Figures 5 and 9 Nashville, Mich. V 1939, Serial No. 283,657
wherein it closes the caps opening 4 to prevent discharge of the contents of the container, and to the opposite position shown in Figure 6 wherein the caps opening is opened. Means for operating the valve comprises a member It in Figures 5 1-8 or iii in Figures 9-11, member ll being turnable on a pintle ll carried by the body 1 and operatively connected with the valve. In Figures 1-8 the bearing 8 extends in a direct line and the valve 9 is flat and is operatingly connected with 10 member III by mutually engaging parts as said member's arm l2 engaging in the valves notch I3; while in Figures 9-11 thebearing 8 is arcuate, the valve S is correspondingly curved and the member I0 isoperatingly connected with this 15 valve integrally.
Suitable means for urging the valve 9 or 9 to normal closed position includes the spring ll coiled around the pintle i I, one of its ends engaging the operating member Ill and its other and engaging the body I in Figures 1-8; or the spring I4 coiled around the pin H its ends engaging the operating member I0 and the plate II in Figures 9, 10 which plate may be removed by unscrewing its mounting screw l6 for assembling the valve 9 in the arcuate bearing 8 The operating member III or I0 has an outer (under) surface ll, preferably curved as shown. The user holding the container in one hand and a tooth brush I! in his other hand with the bristles thereof adjacent the mouth of the crosssectionally rectangular portion I9 01' the opening 4 of the cap, presses the bristles against the surface i! of the operating member ID or I0 as indicated in Figure 2 thus turning said operating member to the position in which it opens the valve to permit a ribbon 20 of the container's contents 2! to be spread on the bristles of the brush.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in th claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of any particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim: a
1. A detachable cap for the vent of a tooth paste container or the like, having a body with a discharge opening communicating with the vent, a valve slidable on the body to and from operative position closing the opening and a member turnable on the body, operatively connected with the valve for sliding the same and having an outer surface adapted to be engaged, for turning said member to a positionopening the valve, by a tooth brush or the like positioned adjacent the 55 mouth of the opening for receiving therefrom contents of the container, and means for urging the valve to normal closed position.
2. A detachable cap for the vent of a tooth paste container or the like, having a body with a discharge opening communicating with the vent, an arcuate slide bearing and a valve slidable in the bearing to and from operative position closing the opening and a member turnable on the 10 body and operatively connected with the valve for sliding the same, and means for urging the valve to normal closed position.
3; A detachable cap for the vent of a tooth paste container or the like, having a body with a l discharge opening communicating with the vent,
ing the opening the bearing having closing means at an end thereof removable for permitting the insertion of the valve endwise into the bearing,
and means for urging the valve to normal closed 10 position.
