ANDREW J. SALVAS, OF FRANKLIN, NEW JERSEY.
FOUNTAIN TOOTH-BRUSH.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. SALvAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Franklin, in the county of Sussex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Tooth-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fountain tooth-brushes. The invention has for an object to im prove the construction of fountain toothbrushes, so as to provide a device that may be carried in the users pocket similarly to a fountain pen, and is especially adapted for traveling persons, such as soldiers, motorists and other purposes.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fountain tooth-brush which may be easily and quickly filled and the contents forced out on the bristles of the brush head.
A further object of this invention is to provide a fountain tooth-brush of this character, which will be simple, practical, and comparatively inexpensive in construction that will be accessible at all times to its user and its operation assured.
With these and other objects in view ,the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a-longitudinal sectional view of my improved fountain tooth-brush made in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referrin more particularly to the drawings, 1 deslgnates the cylindrical handle, 2 theshank, 3 the brush, and 4 the bristles secured to the brush made in accordance with my invention.
The cylindrical handle 1 is fully open at its outer end and is provided with a recess 5 at its inner end, the walls of which are Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 18, 1916. Serial No. 109,926.
provided with screw threads 5 to removably receive a paste tube 6 therein. The shank 2 is provided with a passage 7, substantially triangular in cross sect1on, communicatlng at one end with the recess 5 and having its opposite end inclined upwardly as at 8 and opening out through the shank 2 ata point above the plane of the bristles 4. The paste tube 6 is cylindrical in cross section and is removably mounted in the hollow handle 1 and has one end provided with a hollow lug 9 having exterior screw threads 10 thereon to fit the threads 5 of the recess 5 of the shanks thereby alining its bore with the passage 7, and permit its easy removal therefrom. The interior of the tube 6 is provided with longitudinally extending guide rods 11 which are arranged therein at diametrically opposite points and terminate near the outer end of the tube 6 to receive the plunger 12 thereon. The outer end of the tube 6 is provided with an aperture 13 through which extends a plunger screw 14. The plunger screw 14 terminates at its inner end at a spaced distance from the inner end of the tube 6. The outer end of the plunger screw is provided with a flange 15, having a hollow boss 16 formed centrally on its outer face, which boss is rotatably mounted, in the aperture 13 of the tube 6. The connection of the boss 16 to the flange 15 forms a shoulder 17 which shoulder engages the inner face of the tube '6 and prevents outward movement of the screw with relation thereto. The interior of the boss 16 is provided with screw threads 18 to receive the cap 19 therein.
The cap 19 is provided with the peripheral depending flange 20 which rotatably engages the outer surface of the cylindrical handle 1 preventing lateral movement of the same, a screw threaded stud 21 is formed centrally on the inner face of the cap 19 and receives the threads 18 of the boss 16 to permit the rotation of the plunger screw 14. The plunger 12 is slidably mounted in the tube 6 and is screw threadedly fitted u on the plunger screw 14 and is provided at 'ametrically opposite points with recesses 22 to slidably receive the guide rods 11 in the tube to prevent independent rotation of the plunger 12 on the plunger screw 14.
Upon rotation o the cap 19, the plunger screw will be rotated forcing the plunger 12 down into the tube and forcin the material contained therein out througl i the passage 7 of the shank 2 upon the bristles 4: of the brush head 3. To prevent the paste leaking from the tube at all times it is only necessary to give the cap 19 a reversed turn thereby causing a suction which will draw the paste back up into the tube 6.
An elongated hood 23 is provided to removably fit over the brush head and the hood 23 is substantially cylindrical in cross section and closed at one end, the open end frictionall vent acci ental isplacement of the hood therefrom, this hood keeping the bristles in a sanitary condition when not in use. The closed end of the hood 23 is provided with an air vent 24 to permit the bristles to thoroughly dry.
A double clip, 25 is provided with a body 26, having oppositely extending spring arms 27 The body of the clip is provided with an aperture'28 through which extends a suitable fastening means 29 for rigidly securing the same to the exterior of the handle 1 near its open end thereof.
One arm 27 is adapted to engage the depending flange 20 of the cap 19 and prevent accidental rotation thereof, and the opposite arm is adapted to frictionally engage a garment or other support for holding the brush in position upon the user when not in use.
In use:
The hood is removed from the brush head and the same is held in a perpendicular position, the cap is then rotated at the end of the handle and the paste Will run out through the passage 7 upon the brush bristles, then the brush is inverted to a horizontal position and the paste will lie fiat upon the brush. The brush is used as usual, and then rinsed thoroughly and if any paste is oozing out all that is necessary is to reversely turn the cap which action will create a suction and cause the paste to be sucked back up into the tube. The cap is then reenga mg the shank 2 to prenaeaeve placed over the bristles and the brush. replaced in the pocket. 7
Slight changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim hereto appended.
What is claimed is:
A fountain tooth brush comprising a cylindrical shank a hollow handle formed integrally with the one end of the shank, said shank provided in one end with a recess centrally thereof and communicating with the hollow handle, a brush head formed integrally with the opposite end of the shank, bristles carried by the brush head, said shank provided with a diagonally arranged passage which has its inner end communicating with the recess, its outer end opening out through said head carrying end of the shank and located at a point above the ends of the bristles, said recess provided with screwthreads, a tube removably secured in the handle and recess, longitudinally extending guides arranged in the tube at diae metrically opposite points, a plunger slidably mounted in said tube and associated with said guides, a plunger screw rotatably mounted in said tube and associated with said plunger, a cap frictionally-engaging the walls of the open end of the cylindrical handle and inclosmg said tube, means car ried by said cap and engaging said plun er screw for rotating the plunger screw %or moving the plunger downwardly into said tube and forcing the contents of the tube through the recess and out through the passage onto the bristles, and means carried by said handle and engaging said cap for bolding the cap against accidental rotation, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW J. SALVAS.
