g 2 Claims. (01 131187) The invention relates to an improved method and appliance for purifying tobacco smoke and has for its primary object the provision of an improved method of the character indicated 5 whereby noxious or injurious ingredients may be readily removed from'tobacco.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved appliance of the character indicated so constructed and arranged thatthe purifying element may be readily removed and replaced when desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. 1 The invention consists in the improved method and appliance hereinafter described and claimed.
I The invention will be best understood by refering element being inserted in the filtering tube and the used filtering element being ejected 7 thereby from the tube; a
3O Fig. 5 an enlarged section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 2; 1
Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modified form of filtering element;
Fig. '7 a View similar to Fig. 4 and showing a fresh filtering element being inserted and the used filtering element being expelled thereby;
and i Fig. 8 a section taken substantially on line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises a smokers appliance consisting of a hollow stem I having a bell mouth II at one end for the reception of a cigarette 12 or other article to be smoked therein.
45 A stop bead or shoulder I3 is formed in the stem Hl'adjacent the inner end of the mouth II and a removable tube l4, preferably made of glass, is arranged to be inserted in the stem Ill and provided with a flange or shoulder M to engage and contact with the stop shoulder or bead l3 and thereby limit the inward movement of the tube M in the stem H], as shown in Fig. 2; A
filtering element I6 is preferably formed of a semi-rigid wire wound with an absorbent, fibrous material to a thickness to fairly snugly fit the interior of the tube 14 and somewhat-shorter than ce in the same, and is inserted as shown in said tube before the tube is inserted in the stem Ill. The filtering element lGhas been impregnated with ethylene glycol or other chemical having the property of extracting and retaining nicotine and 5 coal tar derivatives from smoke passed there-- through .or thereover. The filtering. element I 6 may also be impregnated with menthol if desired. The tube l4 is'of suflicient length to protrude slightly from the end of the stem H] as shown, 9
and a mouthpiece i5 is threaded on said stem to engage the protruding end of said tube and hold it nicely in place, as shown in Fig. 2.
By this arrangement, a filtering element isprovided which will remove the nicotine and coal tar 15 derivatives fromtobacco smoke before they pass to the mouth of the smoker, thereby removing injurious ingredients from the "smoke.
By making the filtering element of semi-rigid material as described it will have sufficient longitudinal stiffness so that when it is desired to insert a fresh element in the tube l4, insertion of the fresh element will eject the used element as indicated in Fig. 4. In this way removal and replacement of the filtering element may be readily accomplished whenever desired.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 6, '7, and 8, a straight cylindrical filtering element is shown which is also impregnated with ethylene glycol, or other chemical for the purpose of extracting nicotine and coal tar :derivatives from smoke passing therethrough or thereover, and may also be impregnated with menthol as before.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred method and appliance for carrying the invention intoeffect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and mod- 40 ifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims. v
I' claim: 1 I
l. The combination. with a stem of a smokers appliance having. an internal stop adjacent one end thereof, of a tube removably mounted there.- in, seating against raid stop and protruding from the other end of said stem; a mouthpiece threaded on the other end of said stem'andjcontacting with the protruding end of said tube; and a 111- tering element removably mounted in said tube.
2. The combination specified in claim 1 in which the stem is provided with a bell mouth at one end to receive a cigarette or the like" and th tube stop is adjacent said bell month. 5 I
