Description

. A. REF SDALA A SKI BINDING Filed March 28, 1938 Pafenfednec. `1.2, 1939v 2,183,171 f. .SKI BmDiNG Anfinn Refsdal, Lilleaker, near slo, Norway v Application-March 2s, 1938, serial No. 198,569 a In NorWayAuglist 15, 19,36'l y claims.
The present invention relates to a ski binding.y I
with rigid toev irons and `heel strap, whichl 'is vadapted to be used kfor slalom as well as for ordinary running. i
Most known slalom ordinary ski running, v'as the front members ofl the heel strap are passed below the toe irons; so that .the binding', as required for slalom, affords a greater resistance against the upwards ,movement ofthe heel than desired for ordinary use. In accordance withthe present inventio-nthis drawback is avoidedthereby that the heel strap t,
'is passed through vchannel shaped depressions extending along the inside of the vertical parts n `between vthesole of the Aboot and the in some cases 'onlyalong the rear part of the toe of the toeirons, so that the front membersof the heel strap will be located at least at'the rear part of the toe irons below the sole ofthe boot, i. e. horizontal part of the toe irons. f
AIn this manner thepivot points, of theheel strap will be placed further forwards, whereby less resistance is made against the vertical movement of thev heelr when the binding is -to be used rvfor ordinary ski running.
When the binding is to'be used forslalom the front members of the heel rstrap are passed in the known manner below special side lugs secured to the ski behind the toe iron.
For bindings in accordance with the present in -rv Vention it is preferred to use toe irons-provided with channel shaped depressions along'their -vertical parts, said channel shaped depressions ex-4 tending along the whole length of the toe iron or iron, the depressions or channels being provided in the latter case with a forward opening through which the'heel strap may bev passed either for-y wards below the front part of the toe irons ory inwards through V-a mortise hole or cross 'channel belowthe horizontalpart of the toe iron. y In some cases the front ends of theheel strap may be secured to the toeirons in some suitable manner at the Aforward. end of said channels.
` Two embodiments of the invention are il1us. tratedon the drawing, which shows in perspective View a'part. of a ski, a heel strap and in Fig. 1, a toe iron according to one embodimen of the invention,'and in t y Fig, 2 is a toe iron according to anotherembodiment ofthe invention. 1
I (and 8) is the ski, and 2, 2 and3, 3 the toe irons, which maybe providedwith clamps, brackets or the like (not shown) for gripping the boot sole and which'may be secured to the ski in any suitable, manner, such as for 'instance by means Vof screws, vl and 5 are steel wires or the like, forming the front members of the heel strap. y
bindings are unsuitable forl substantially Astraight line. I 2.. A ski bindngaccording to claim 1, wherein there is an opening through the bottom of each of said toe irons at the front end o said channel.
`In accordance with the em' ldiment illustrated in Fig; 1 of the drawing the toe iron 2 has a chan-`A nel shaped depressionextending-from the rear v edge of 'the' toe iron to slightly beyond the-middle par-t thereof, the channel being kopenatits front end so that the wire 4 maybe' passedthrough the' opening and passed inr a substantially straightv y line to a suitable tightening device (notshown).
Although itis preferred to carry the ,channel as far forward as illustrated on the drawingthis Aobviously is not absolutely necessary, as even a shorterchannel will atleast partlyhavethe de# v sired effect.l z
Inv accordance with theembodiment'of the inventionillustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing the'- rr` channel shaped depressions 6,*6 extend'along the whole length of toe irons 3` and?, so
in front of the toe ironj" Insomecases the mortise hole or a -transverse channel'for taking up'the heel strapwire may be placedfarther back, so as-to be located below the horizontal'part of the toe irons;
Other embodiments of va skibinding according to vmy invention and within thescope thereof will be readily apparent tov an expert skilled inthe art.' The'scope of my inventionistherefore deiined bythe appended claims. I .i
"I'claim:
toe irons and a flexible heel strap secured to thev ski independently ofl said toe irons, the improvement consisting of aset of toe irons, each of said that heel strap wire 5 will be locatedbetween the boot `sole and the toe iron all the way tothe front f edgej thereof. In this case the heel. strap wire 'as indicated. on the drawing may be passed through a mortisehole 1 in the ski 8 immediately 1. In a ski binding of the type comprising rigid toe irons havilig yalong'the yinside of its v lower verv tical edge a channel forreceiving said'heel strap,
`said'channel extending from the rear of `said toe iron to. at least midway between the rearand the front' of said toe iron,` said strap" passing through said channelan'd along said ytoje iron in' a 3. In a ski binding of the type comprising rigidl Y toe irons and a exible heel strap secured -to the skit independently -of said toe irons, the improve-y ment consisting of a set of toe irons, each of said ytoe irons having along itsv lower verticaledge a channel for receiving said heel strap,'said ychan'- nel extending along the entire length of said lower verticaledge. a
