ATTACHMENT FOR CARTON STITGHING MACHINES Filed July 5, 1938 INVENTOR Bg w yfuamm ATTCVJRNEY ATTEST- Patented Dec. 5, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ATTACHIVIENT FOR CARTON STITCHING MACHINES Application July 5, 1938, Serial No. 217,636
3 Claims.
This invention relates to an attachment for use with stitching machines.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an attachment adaptable for use with carton 5 stitching machines.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment adaptable to carton stitching machines comprising carton blank holding and securing means.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character which is simple to construct and operate and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims which follow.
The attachment of the present invention is adapted for use with stitching machines used tor assembling fiber board cases which are secured by wire stitching or metallic fasteners.
By way of illustration but Without limitation the attachment of the present invention will be described for use in assembling fiber board cases comprising end members and a one-piece body member forming the sides of the carton.
In practice, it is customary for the operator to stand before the machine with a supply of carton end blanks on a table at his left and a supply of carton body members on a table at his right. With this arrangement, the operator in assembling each carton is required to turn approxi 'mately'90 to the table at his left to pick up an end blank and then turn back to the machine to place the end blank into a clip beneath the stitching head. The operator then must turn ap- 85 proximately 90 to hisright, pick up a body member, form it into shape, turn back to the machine, place the body of the container around the end blank previously placed in the machine and then stitch to fasten the end blank within the body 40 member. The operator then must turn 90 to the right, place the partially formed container on the table, turn approximately 180 to the table at his left, pick up a second end blank, turn approximately 90 back to the machine to place the to second end member in the machine, turn again approximately 90 to the table at his right, pick up the partially formed container, reverse the ends of the container, turn approximately 90 back to. the machine and stitch in the second end.
0 In accordance-with the present invention there is provided a shelf for holding a pile of carton end blanks and a carton end blank holding means at either side of the stitching head. There is further provided below the stitching head an 5 adjustable shelf on which is arranged a supply of carton bodies. By use of the attachment of the present invention the operator standing at the machine is. enabled to reach forward and in one movement to pick up an end blank in each hand. One of the end blanks is placed on the 5 anvil and beneath the stitching head and simul-- taneously the other end blank is secured in the carton end blank holding means arranged toone side of the stitching head. .The operator then with another movement forward is enabled to 10 .pick up a body member, form it and place it around the end blank beneath the stitching head and stitch the end blank into place. The operator then removes the partially formed container from the stitching machine, reverses the ends of 15 the container and again with a forward movement places the unstitched end of the body memher around the end blank previously secured in the holding means. The container and the second end blank are then removed from the secur- 20 ing means, placed in the machine and stitched.
Use of the attachment of the present invention enables the operator to eliminate the many turning movements of his body and thus provides a material saving in time and labor.
Reference is had to the drawing in which like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a carton stitching machine with which the attachment of 30 the present invention is employed.
Figure 2 is a front view of the machine and attachment shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view.
, Figure 4 is a view taken substantially on the 35 line 4-4 of Figure 2.
The stitching'machine illustrated in the drawing may be of the conventional type comprising standard I, stitching head 2 and anvil 3. As shown in Figure 3, a track 4 may be welded or 4 otherwise'rigidly secured at one of its ends as at 5 to either side of standard I. The free ends of tracks 4 are supported upon risers 6 rigidly secured as by brace rods 1 and 8. It will be understood, of course, that tracks 4 may be of the portable type and need not be in any way affixed to the stitching machine.
Carton end holding means 9, comprises a fiat relatively rigid ledge of sheet metal or other suitable material and is extended forwardly from each of the tracks 4 substantially in parallel relationship with anvil 3. Ledge 9 may be welded or otherwise rigidly secured to track 4, or, if desired, may be adjustably secured to track 4 by use of plate I0 and bolt H for movement from and toward the stitching head to a position best'suited to the operator. Also, ledge 9 may be angularly bent downwardly as at I2 to facilitate removal of the carton end members therefrom.
As shown in Figure 4, ledge 9 is provided with resilient spring clamp I3 for removably holding the carton end members thereon. Also, a shelf I4 for holding a pile of carton end blanks provided with retaining walls I5 is rigidly secured to the upper surface of ledge 9 as at I6.
Container body supply shelf I1 is secured to standard I as by screw I8 threaded within one of the openings I9 provided in standard I. The several openings I9 allow for vertical adjustment of shelf H to suit the convenience of the operator.
In the drawing, there is shown a track 4, a ledge 9 provided with a clip I3 and a shelf I4 provided at either side of the stitching head. The dual provision of these elements in this manner is for convenience only. In the formation of each carton, only one ledge 9 and clip I3 is brought into use. Likewise, with the provision of a single shelf I4 the operator upon reaching forward may in a single movement seize an end member first in one hand and then a second end member in the other hand. Consequently, it will be seen that the provision of a single rack, ledge and end blank supply shelf will serve equally as well for carrying out the purpose of the present invention.
I claim:
1. In combination with a carton stitching machine including a standard provided with a stitching head and anvil extending forwardly in substantially parallel relationship from the standard, a track secured to the standard and a carton end blank holding ledge adjustably mounted on the track and extended forwardly from the track in substantially parallel relationship with the anvil.
2. In combination with a carton stitching machine including a standard provided with a stitching head and an anvil extending forwardly from the standard, a track rigidly secured to the standard, a carton end blank holding means comprising a flat relatively rigid ledge adjustably secured to the track for adjustment from and toward the standard and extended forwardly from the track with the anvil, the ledge on its upper surface being provided with a resilient carton end blank holding clip.
3. In combination with a carton stitching machine including a standard provided with a stitching head and an anvil extending forwardly from the standard, a track rigidly secured to the standard, a carton end blank holding means comprising a fiat relatively rigid ledge adjustably secured at one end to the track for adjustment from and toward the standard and extended outwardly from the track in substantially parallel relationship with the anvil, the ledge at its free end being slanted slightly downwardly and on its upper surface being provided with a resilient carton end blank holding clip, and a shelf for holding a pile of carton body blanks adjustably mounted for vertical adjustment on the standard.
