TABLE LEG ATTACHING MEANS Dec. 12, 1950 Filed June 2, 1948 INVENTOR. \IAKOB UCKER aw M ATTORNE Patented Dec. 12, 1,950
v 3331: I V iiffiifwiei. er. v
This invention relates to improvements in leg attachments for tables and other articles and hasfor its general object the provision of means for facilitating convenient attachment for the leg to the bottom ofthe table top. I
Broadly, it is an object of my invention to provide a construction whereby a single connecting bolt and nut may be .employed to iirmly secure the legto the table top with no danger oi the leg being turned or moved out of centered position with respect to the table top when the table is moved about the floor.
- More particularly; it is an object to -facilitate assemblyby the" provision of means on the bottom'ot the table top auxiliary to the attaching bolt and nut ior readily positioning or guiding showing two corners.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken through line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of one corner without the table leg and attaching block being shown.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a table leg used with my attaching means.
Referring to the drawing, numeral l represents a table comprising a top H, having attached along the underneath edge by glueing or other means, supporting pieces 12 which run almost to the corners. At each corner l3, a block it is attached to the bottom of the top H by screws I corner blocks It being oi. the same thickness as the upporting pieces i2 and hav-' ing a straight e22 c it at a 45 angle at the cor ner. An I! having a horizontal'flange i3 is attached to the supporting pieces l2 by inserting the flange It in a; groove I! in thesupporting pieces I2 thus covering the edge otthe table top, the edges of the supporting pieces I 2 and the corner blocks I 4 and providing a finishededge to the table I II.
A corner leg supporting block 20 is attached adjacent to block it by screws 2| along a center.
line bisecting each corner, as indicated by dot 2 Claims. (chm-11o) 2 orie-helg the thickness of blocks is and have a bolt 23 running through the center with its head 2 4's'eated within a recess 28, as clearly shown in Flam-.2 and'a; Blocks 2! are flvesided, having 5 two'parallelside's 2|, 21, a side 28 at right angles to sides 20,- 21' and-opposite to side 28, two' angular sides 23; 3l'that meet at point 3|, as shown bestinFig.'4.-.. 1
- Each leg .32 is comprised of two pieces of tub ing 33. 34 'oruniiorm diameter,-welded together at several'points 35. The lowerportions are paralleland the upper portion isflrst' bent in a Y-iormationfl, and then at a 90=angle to the lower portion providing parallelhorizontal seatmg portions 36, 31 upon which the table toprests.
'The diameter of the tubing 33, 34 is slightly geate'r thanthe thickness of supporting block In assembling the legs a: with the table ti I I,
the table top it is placed with the underneath.
. sides at, 21 is slightly greater than the distance between the seating portions 38, 31 so that when the seating portions 36, 31' are pressed downward against the parallel sides 26, 21 or the block 20, the resiliency between portions 36, 31 causes 3 these portions to grip the sides 26, 21. A covering block 39, having a central hole 40, somewhat similar in shape to block 20 but wide enough to cover the seating portions 36, 31, is then placed upon the seating portions 36, 31 with the bolt 35 23 passing through the hole 40. A washer ll is evident that tables of such assembly can be stored and shipped inv "knocked down" condition and be rapidlyand easily assembled by the storekeeper or retail purchaser. 1 g It is obvious that various changes and modiilcations may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the general spirit of. the invention.
I claim:
so 1. Atable leg attaching means for a table having a top and edges, said. means comprising corher blocks attached to the underneath side of table top adjacent the edges thereof. said corner blocks having a s raight edge atv a and dash line 22. Blocks 2. are approximately I angle to the table edges. corner leg supporting a 3 blocks attached adjacent each said corner block along a medial line through said corner blocks and said supporting blocks, said supporting blocks having two parallel sides, said supporting blocks approximately half the thickness of said corner blocks, a recess and a central hole communicating with said recess in said supporting blocks, a bolt seated within said recess and passing through said hole, legs for said table, said legs comprised of two pieces of tubing welded together, the upper portion of said legs bent in a Y-i'ormation, parallel horizontal seating portions at the top of said legs upon which said table top rests, the distance between. said seating leg portions being equal to the distance between said parallel sides oi said supporting blocks, said seating leg portions resting against said parallel sides of said supporting blocks, a,
.parallel sides, a recess and a central hole coma municating with said recess in said supporting blocks, a bolt seated within said recess and passing through said hole, legs for said table, said legs comprised of two pieces of tubing welded together, the upper portion of said legs bent in covering block having a central hole and wider than the distance between said seating leg portions, a washer and wing nut for said bolt for holding said covering block against said seating leg portions for clamping said table legs between said covering block and said table top.
2. A table leg attaching means for a table having a table top, comer blocks attached to the underneath side of said table top adjacent the edges thereof, corner leg supporting blocks attached adjacent each said corner block along a medial line through said corner blocks and said supporting blocks, said supporting blocks having two a Y formation. parallel horizontal seating portions at the top 01' said legs upon which said table top rests. said seating leg portions resting against said parallel sides of said supporting blocks, a covering block having a central hole and wider than the distance between said seating leg portions, a washer and wing nut for said bolt for holding said covering block against said seating leg portions.
