Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C. K. CUCKLER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
HORSE-COLLAR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,821, dated October 19, 1858.
To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, C. K. CUCKLER, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in combining and arranging in a collar the breast and side plates in such a manner that the collar may be adjusted laterally or longitudinally to suit the size of the horses neck, as will be hereafter fully described.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my improvement I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification Figure l represents a collar stuli'ed and ready for use. Fig. 2 rep resents the frame ot' the collar before being stuffed, with the several parts of my invention clearly shown. Figs. 3, 4C, and 5 rep resent parts of the trame which will be described.
In Fig. l A, A, represent the stuffed sides of the collar. D, D, represent two springs which are secured to the frame as will be seen in Fig. 2, c', being a pin att-ached to the ends of these springs. In the several other figures where Jfound D, D, are the same springs, and 2', the pins attached to them. B, B, and F, F, represent portions of the frame which are secured together as shown at x.
T he pieces, F, are made in the form shown in Fig. 3, and B, B, enter between the parts H, H, and are secured to them. The lower portion of the pieces, F, are made hollow as shown in Fig. 3, and into these pieces the breast plate E, entersmplate E, is provided' with holes (a, a, 91,) and the pin enters these holes when the plate is inserted into the pieces, F, and serves to hold them in place. i
(a, a.,) represent the side plates, which are provided with holes (71. a u) (Fig. 4) and which enter cavities in the side pieces of the frame marked B, B. O, C, are springs secured to these pieces (B) and (d d) are pins attached to said springsthese pins enter the holes in the side plates (a, (1,) and secure them in position.
(m) represents a strap which secures the two side plates together at top.
In the operation of this invention it will be readily seen that when the plate E, enters the pieces F, F, and the pins (i, 2') enter the holes (a n) of this plate, that the collar may be extended or contracted laterally and stationed at any desired point by means of the springs and pins catching in the holes in the plate. In like manner the plates (a a.) may be shoved in, or drawn out and secured at any desired point by means of the pins cl, (Z, on the springs C, C,-thus adjusting the collar both laterally and lonOitudinally so that it may be adapted to nec is of different size.
lVhen the frame of the collar is padded and stuffed, it must be so done as to allow the springs and the plates room to be operated easily.
I am aware that collars have been made to adjust laterally, and also longitudinally, but I am not aware that collars have been made to adjust, so as to contract or expand the collar in two ways to suit'any particular occasion. Consequently I do not wish to claim either the side or breast plates individually; but
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent is- The combination of the breast plate E, springs D, D, side plates (a, ra) and springs C, C, when the whole are arranged, constructed, and operated, in the manner herein specified, and for the purpose set forth.
C. K. OUCKLER.
