Description

I. H. WHITE. Bias-Rule.
No. 217,967. Patented July 29,1879.
Wzinesses: Inventor.- W I WQ W M 'm 4 the usual scale of measurement.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK H. WHITE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIAS-RULES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,967, dated July 29, 1879; application filed January 1879. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. WHITE, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bias-Rules for merchants and others, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents my improved rule folded up. Fig. 2 represents it in position for use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
My invention relates to that class of rules used by merchants and shop-keepers for the purpose of enabling them to cut silks and other goods on the bias; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the base or hypotenuse of my improved rule, provided with On each end of the base A is formed an inclined shoulder, a, forming an angle of forty-five degrees at each point Hinged to the base A, at I) b, are the arms B B, which fold down when not in use, as shown in Fig. 1, and when in use are unfolded, as shown in Fig. 2, the two arms forming a right angle at their point of juncture O, and being supported in that position by the shoulders d (1. One or. both of the arms B B may be provided with the usual scale for measurement.
It is evident from the above description that any inerchants yard-stick may be so constructed as to be readily converted into abiasrule when needed, andbe again folded into a
