IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPES.

Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,960, dated July 29, 1879; application filed December 9, 1R78.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL H. SEAGER, of Manteno, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Pipe, of whichthe following is a specication.

This invention relates specifically to an improved joint for stove-pipes, stacks, Snc., the object whereof is to enable the pipe to be lengthened and shortened at pleasure, and at the same time make a perfectly tight and secure connection at any point and prevent the escape of smoke.

It consists of a section of pipe unriveted at the lower end, whereby its diameter at this end can be increased and diminished at pleasure by means of a lever pivoted to the pipe on one side and connected by a strap with the other side, so that by moving the lever back and forth the pipe is contracted and expanded, and secured in any desired position by a pawl engaging a ratchet-guard over the lever.

It further consists of a leaf riveted to the inside of one edge, so as to form a pocket to receive the other edge, thereby forming a tight joint, so that no smoke can possibly escape.

In the accompanying` drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improvement. Fig. 2is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a sect-ion of stove-pipe containing my improvements for making an adjustable joint, and B is another section of pipe with which a joint or connection is made.

Stove-piping is ordinarily made by bending the sheet metal into a cylindrical form and joining the two edges with rivets; but in the section containing my improvements but one rivet, a, is usedto connect the two edges, and this forms a pivot, which permits the pipe to be contracted and expanded below, so that the diameter is decreased and increased at pleasure.

On that side, b, of the pipe whose edge is placed under the edge of the other side, b', is fulcrumed, nearits end, a lever, C. The upper end of this lever is held under the guard D, riveted horizontally to said pipe, and provided with perforations, which engage the pawl c, pivoted on said lever. On side b is riveted horizontally a strap, d, the other end whereof is pivoted to lever G.

Inside of side b' is riveted, at e e', piece D', the straight edge coinciding with the edge of said side. This forms a pocket, f, which receives the edge of side b, the rivet e at the bottom being set sufficiently far back to allow the edge of side b to enter to the proper distance when the pipe is contracted.

The operation of myximproveinent is as follows: When the section A is to be joined to section B the pawl is disengaged from the plate D, leaving the lower end of section A free, so that it can be slipped freely over section B. When it is at the proper point it is secured by moving the lever to the right and drawing the two parts b b as closely together as possible, and then permitting the pawl to engage the plate.

Now, when the pipe is to be shortened for any` purpose, the lever is released. This allows the pipe to expand, and it can be shoved down on section B the necessary distance without difficulty, and then contracted and secured by the lever, as above.

To lengthen the pipe the same course is pursued.

By this arrangement it will be readily seen that pipe-joints can be easily made and the pipe adjusted to different places with but little trouble. At the same time, owing to the edge of the side b being pocketed in the opposite side. no smoke can possibly escape, the joint being as close as the ordinary socket-joint.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. As an improvement in stove-pipes, the section A, arranged as described, so that it can be contracted and expanded at one end, and having si'de b connected at or near the adjustable end with side b by strap d, pivoted to lever C, in combination with lever C, secured by pawl and ratchet, substantially as described.

2. As an improvement in stove-pipes, the piece D', forming, with side b', a pocket to receive the edge of side b, in combination with sides b b, strap d, and lever C, substantially as described.
