This invention relates to Venetian blinds, and more particularly to such a blind that is of great strength and so attached to a window as to be burglar-proof.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a blind of the Venetian type, constructed of heavy materials and arranged when installed to be locked in open or extended position so as to protect the window from being entered such as by burglars or the like.
Another object of my invention is to provide such a Venetian blind that is simple, practical and efficient in operation.
A further object is to provide a Venetian blind construction that is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to install and operate.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and be brought out more fully in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the same taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along the line 9 4. of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of Fig. 3 illustrating the locking mechanism.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view illustrating a feature of the operating mechanism; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view illustrating a modification of the structure shown in Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and especially to Figs. 1 and 2, I show a window i9 of the display type such as a store window having the usual glass pane set between an upper front wall l2 and a lower front wall |3, the ceiling of the room being illustrated at I4, there being a display cabinet |5 located immediately interiorly of the window, the cabinet having a floor or sill I6, a rear wall side walls IB and a top wall i9. The Venetian blind comprising my invention is indicated generally at 20 and includes an upper housing 2| (Fig. 3) which consists of a divided chamber 22 having an upper chamber 22a and lower chamber 22b, a front wall 23, a rear wall 24 and end Walls 25. A frame member 26 separates chambers 22a and 22h and is provided with pairs of chain apertures 21 and cable apertures 28. A channel member 29 is suitably secured to floor or sill I6 and is so constructed as to have ared, flanged portions 30. A pair of circular flanged members 3| are secured to channel 29 by bolts 32 or otherwise, and each provides a base for a stanchion 33 which in the preferred form is shown as consisting of a pipe of substantial strength. A lock screw 34 holds stanchion 33 5 to flange 3|. A similar circular iiange 35 is secured as by bolts 36 to frame member 26, a lock bolt 31 being provided for attachment of flange 35 to stanchion 33.
A horizontal shaft 38 is mounted at each end 1 in ange bearings 39 secured to end walls 25 and a pair of sprocket segments 40 are rigidly attached to shaft 38. A pair of chains 4| are carried by sprocket segments 40 and these chains consist of a plurality of plain links 42 and supporting links u 43, links 43 having lugs 44, opposite pairs of which are attached to and provide support for a link member 45. A plurality of louvres 46 are supported by link 45 of each chain 4|, louvres 46 preferably consisting of strong material such as 20 sheet steel, the edges 41 of which are turned down to form flanges. The louvres are provided with elongated apertures 48, each for the reception of stanchion 33, and elongated apertures 49 each for the reception of an operating cable to be described hereinafter. The ends of each chain 4| are secured to straps 59,- the opposite ends of which are secured to a channel member 6| which may be considered as being one of the louvres. Channel member 5| has anged edges 52 which n are adapted to rest between flanges 86 of the channel member 29 when the blind 26 is in an extended position, and is provided with apertures 53 for the reception of flange 3| and stanchion 33. Channel 5| is further provided with an aperture 54 under ea'ch aperture 49 and a pair of lugs 85 are located adjacent aperture 54 on the lower side of channel 5| carrying a pin 56 adapted for the attachment of one end of a cable 61 which extends through apertures 49 and 54 of the louvres. The o cable 61 is attached at its upper end to a drum 68 secured to a shaft 59 mounted in bearings 60, secured to end walls 25. A sprocket 6| is secured to shaft 59 and carries a chain 62 adapted to be passed over a pair of idler sprockets 63 mounted on a bracket 64, suitably secured to ceiling |4. A sprocket 65 mounted on a shaft 66 is carried by a bearing bracket 8l secured to the floor or sill I6, and an operating crank 68 is provided for shaft 66. A drum 69 is secured to shaft 38 and 60 an operating cable 10 is secured thereto as by clamp bolt 1| and passes over and is similarly attached to a drum 'l2 carried by a shaft 13, mounted on an arm '|4 attached to bracket 64. A
cable 16 is similarly securedto drum 12 and to a 56 drum 16 carried by a shaft 11 which is mounted in a bracket 18 on floor or sill I6 and a crank 19 is provided for the operation of shaft 11.
In Fig. 5 I show in detail one of' a pair of locks 80, each of which is provided with a housing 8| suitably secured to channel member 29, the housing 8| containing a solenoid 82 having an armature 83. The housing 8| has a wall 84 provided with an aperture 85. The lock has a lock bolt 86 which is secured to armature 83 and extends through an aperture 81 in an end wall 88 of housing 8|. A collar 89 is secured to armature 83 and a spring 90 is positioned between collar 89 and wall 84. The bolt 86 is provided with the usual beveled face 9|. A keeper 92 is attached to the under side of channel 5| as by bolts 93 and has a. beveled edge 94 for cooperative engagement with beveled face 9| and the lock bolt 86.
I show an operating battery 95 for solenoid 82, being connected thereto by a push-button switch 96, there being the usual circuit wires 91, 98 and 99.
In Fig. 7 I show a modification of the stanchion 33 in the form of a channel |00 which may be desired if greater strength is required than could be provided with a pipe member. In this case the apertures 48a in the louvres would preferably be rectangular.
The operation of my invention should be apparent from the foregoing description, the louvres of the blind being collapsible when raised by the operation of crank 68 which actuates cable 62, drums 58 and cables 51 connected to the bottom louvre 5|. When the louvres are let down or extended, the channel louvre 5| will be dropped into inter-tting position with fixed channel 29 and the-keeper 92 will engage lock bolt 86 which will cause the blinds to be locked in` this extended position. The louvres 46 will be held in this pcsition by virtue of their support on chains 4|. The stanchions 33 will eiectively prevent thedisplacement of the louvres from this position in any unauthorized manner such as a burglarizing operation, and the contents of the store or window will be effectively protected by the blinds as will be clear. When it is desired to raise the blinds the operation of push-button 96 will actuate solenoids 82 to release the keepers 92 of the channel louvre 5|, and the blinds may be raised by the operation of crank 68. 'I'he louvres are adjustable as to angular position by the rocking of shaft 38 by cables 10 and 15 from crank 19 in the well-understood manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eiiect; this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a window, of a Venetion blind comprising a pair of stanchions iixedly secured at both ends adjacent said window, a plurality of louvres slidably mounted on said stanchions, the lowermost louvre comprising a channel bar having its flanges extending downwardly, a keeper arranged within said channel bar and a. lock arranged adjacent the bottom of the window and adapted to engage said keeper and be encased by said channel member when in lowermost position, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a window, of a Venetian blind comprising a pair of stanchions fixedly secured at both ends adjacent said window, a plurality of louvres slidably mounted on said stanchions, the lowermost louvre comprising a channel bar having its anges extending downwardly, a keeper arranged within said channel bar and a lock arranged adjacent the bottom of the window and adapted to engage said keeper and be encased by said channel member when in lowermost position, in combination with means remote from said lock for actuating the same, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a Window, of a Venetian blind comprising a pair of stanchions iixedly secured at both ends, a plurality of louvres slidably mounted on said stanchions, the lowermost louvre comprising a channel bar having its flanges extending downwardly, a channel bar fixed adjacent the lower ends of said stanchions and having its iianges extending upwardly to receive the lowermost louvre between them, and locking means enclosed by said channel bars, substantially as described.
