Description

FASTENING DEVICE -Filed May 13, 1938 Patented Oct. 17, 1939 UNiTED STATES TENT OFFiCE 9 Claims.
This invention relates to fastening devices and is particularly adapted to be embodied in fastening devices to be employed in connection with roofing strips.
An object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of the kind described which is neat and attractive in appearance and simple in construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastening device which will secure roofing strips to each other in such manner that leaks will not develop through or between the strips.
One form of the invention is embodied in a metallic strip which is provided with a plurality of laterally extending lugs, each of the lugs being provided with a pointed tongue adapted to pierce a roofing strip. The lugs are bent and provided with apertures through which the pointed tongues may project when the lugs are folded back upon themselves over one edge of a roofing strip.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent as the following detailed description progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of a roofing structure showing strips of roong material secured to the roof and to each other by a device which Iembodies my invention.
Fig, 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4--4 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan elevation of the improved fastening device.
Referring to the drawing, wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the reference character I0 designates a roof upon which strips II and I2 of roofing material have been placed. It will be noted that the strip Il is broken away to better illustrate certain details of construction of the improved fastening device which is designated generally by the reference character I4.
In accordance with the usual practice, the upper-most strip Il overlaps a portion of the lower-most strip, I2, and it will be noted that the body portion I5 of the fastening device I4 is disposed between the rooiingstrips II and I2, in such manner that a plurality of laterally extending lugs, I6, formed integral with the body portion I5, may be folded back upon themselves over the lower edge of the roofing strip I I. The fastening device I4 is preferably formed from rustproof metal and is preferably secured to the (Cl. 10S-33) roof I by rustproof nails I'I extending through the body portion I5. Obviously the nails and the body portion I5 secure the upper-most edge of the roofing strip i2 to the roof I0.
Each of the lugs I has a pointed tongue, I8, 5 struck up from it, and each of the lugs I6 has a second tongue, I9, struck up from it adjacent its free end to provide an aperture 20 which is adapted to receive the lug IS! when the lug I6 is folded back upon itself as illustrated in Figs. 10 1, 3 and 4.
It will readily be understood that the lugs I6 may be folded back as illustrated in Figs.` 1, 3 and 4 over the lower-most edge of the roofing strip I I and that the pointed tongues I8 may be forced through the roofing strip I I and through the apertures 2G and then bent over to lie against the upper-most surface of the bent lug I6 (Fig. 4). The manner in which the pointed tongues I8 are forced through the roofing strip II is best illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and it will be readily understood that when the pointed tongue I8 is bent to the right (Fig. 4) the tongue I9 may be folded back in place to close the aperture 20 to prevent water from accumulating therein or Q5 passing therethrough and forming a permanent lock.
The fastening device I4 is preferably strengthened by providing ridges 22 and 23. These ridges 22 form channels in which pitch or other sealing media may be flowed to seal the nails` I'l. Preferably, also, the lugs of the fastening device have apertures 2li, located in the portion of the lugs to be bent, so that any Water which may collect between the lugs and the roofing strip will drain away.
In Fig. 1, the lug I 6 at the left hand end of the fastening device I4 is shown in an intermediate stage. In other words, it is shown in the condition wherein it is adapted to have the point I8 pushed through the roofing strip Il, The next lug I6 to the right is shown with the lug It folded and with the pointed tongue I8 projected through the aperture 20. The two lugs I6 at the right of the fastening device I4 are shown completely folded over the lowermost edge of the roofing strip I I and the tongues I9 have been bent to cover or close the aperture 20. The lug at the extreme right shows the pointed tongue I8 bent back over the closed a tongue IS to form a double lock.
The body portions I4 may be of any desired length, but in practice it has been found that a length of eight feet is convenient.
While certain embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims in which it is the intention to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fastening device of the kind described comprising a member adapted to be folded over the edge of a strip to be fastened, said member having a tongue projecting from it and having an aperture adapted to receive the tongue when said member is folded, said tongue being adapted to project through the strip and the aperture, and to be folded over to lock the member to the strip.
2. A fastening device of the kind described comprising a member adapted to be folded over the edge of a strip to be fastened, said member having a tongue projecting from it and having an aperture to receive said tongue, said member also having a second tongue adjacent said aperture, the first mentioned tongue being adapted to project through the strip and the aperture and to be folded over to lock the member to the strip, said second tongue being adapted to be folded to close said aperture.

A fastening device of the kind described comprising an elongated member having a plurality of laterally projecting lugs, each of said lugs having a tongue struck up from it and having a second tongue struck up from it to provide an aperture adapted to receive the rst mentioned tongue, said lugs being foldable over the edge of a strip to be fastened in such manner that the first mentioned lugs project through the strip and through said apertures and are adapted to be folded to lock the strip to said lugs, said second lugs being foldable to close said apertures.

A fastening device of the kind described, comprising an elongated member having at least one portion adapted to be folded over the edge of a strip to be fastened, said member having a projecting portion adapted to pass through said strip and through said folded portion to lock said strip to said elongated member.

A fastening device of the character described, comprising an elongated strip having a plurality of lugs extending in spaced relationship to each other from one of the longitudinal edges of said strip, the portion of each of said lugs which is adjacent said strip having prong means, and the extremity having an aperture adapted to receive said prong means.

A fastening device of the character described, comprising an elongated strip having a plurality of lugs extending in spaced relationship to each other from one of the longitudinal edges of said strip. each of said lugs having a tongue on its portion which is adjacent to said strip adapted to be struck up to form a prong, and having a tongue on its end portion opposite said first tongue adapted to be swung away from the surface of said end portion to form an aperture capable of receiving said first tongue when said end lug portion is folded over.

A fastening device of the character described, comprising an elongated member having a plurality of laterally projecting lugs, said lugs having an aperture in about mid-portion adapted to serve as a drainage outlet when said lugs are bent over a strip to be fastened, each of said lugs having a tongue struck up from it and having a second tongue struck up from it to provide an aperture adapted to receive the first mentioned tongue, said lugs being foldable over the edge of a strip to be fastened in such manner that the first mentioned lugs project through the strip and through said apertures and are adapted to be folded to lock the strip to said lugs, said second lugs being foldable to close said apertures.

A fastening device of the character described, composed of bendable sheet material and comprising an elongated strip having a plurality of lugs extending in spaced relationship to each other from one of the longitudinal edges of said strip, ridges extending along the sides of the elongated strip to form a channel, prong means on each of said lugs located on the portion which is adjacent to said strip, and an aperture on the end portion thereof adapted to receive said prong means when said end portion is bent over and said prong pierces a strip of roofing to be fastened.
9. In combination, a fastening device secured to an underlying roofing sheet, said fastening device having prong means piercing an overlying roofing sheet, and having a portion extending around the edge of said overlying roof-lng sheet and against a surface thereof, said portion having an aperture through which said prong means extends and bends, whereby the overlying roofing sheet is secured to the underlying sheet.
