Description
Oct. 10, 1939. T. F. LARSEIQ 2,115 964 RAM PROTECTOR Filed Sept. 8, 1938 3 T E Lara Patented Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a ram protector or means adapted to be worn by a ram to prevent sexual intercourse with ewes, when desired, rather than resorting to penning up the ram for 5 long periods of time, as is customary and which is harmful to the ram.
A particular object is to provide a structure which will not chafe or harm the ram and one which is readily removable and which will be 10 effectively positioned through the aid of the wool.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating an operative 15 embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure l is a view showing my improvements in place on a ram, the latter being suggested in dotted lines;
2 Figure 2 is a plan view of the protector;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary edge elevation of the protector, and
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view through the protector taken on the line 44 of Figure 2.
5 Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, In designates an attaching sheet or body adapted to encircle the body of the ram as shown in Figure 1. This sheet [0 for example may be 30 made of ordinary metallic chicken wire or it may be made of any other desired material, preferably mesh material, either metallic, textile or otherwise. Such sheet or body being flexible, readily conforms to the contour of the body of the 35 animal and adjacent one corner thereof a flexible cord or lace member II is anchored, which may be of wire or textile material. When the ends of the sheet Ill meet around the body of the animal, the lace II is threaded through the ad- 40 jacent meshes at one end, thus securing the ends together and making an endless body about the body of the animal. Attention is also called to the fact that the lacing is not the only means to hold the sheet in place, since the wool will grow around the wire or textile of the fabric, passing through the meshes thereof and holding the sheet in place, but at the same time permitting its removal. 5
Carried by the body of sheet I0 is a drain or pan I2, for instance of tin, which is substantially half funnel-shaped, having flanges l3 whereby it is fastened to the sheet If). The drain I2 tapers, increasing in width in rearward direction. 10
Said drain I2 is located, as shown in Figure 1, adjacent the male organ of the ram, shielding it against sexual use and being positioned so that any discharge will be into the drain I2 from which the fluid will travel in a rearward direction.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the class described having a body 29 to be secured. about the body of an animal, said body consisting of flexible material having meshes of such multiplicity and size that substantially all of the wool covered by the body will grow therethrough unhampered, an imperforate drain carried by the body dispositioned adjacent the organ of the animal, said drain having a channel increasing in width in rearward direction, and flange means on the drain connecting it to the body, said body being metallic and flexible.
2. A device of the class described having a body to be secured about the body of an animal, said body consisting of flexible material having meshes of such multiplicity and size that substantially all of the wool covered by the body will grow therethrough unhampered, an imperforate drain carried by the body ,dispositioned adjacent the organ of the animal, said drain having a channel increasing in width in rearward direction, and flange means on the drain connecting it to the body, said body being of chicken Wire.
TOM F. LARSEN.
