Description

Oct. 10, 1939. J. H. QUINLAN IWINDOW SHADE AND CURTAIN HOLDER Filed Feb. 2, 1939 ATTORNEYS WITNESS Pat nted Oct. 10, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to window shade and curtain holders and has for an object to provide a simplified device which will support a shade and which will have novel means for securing the hemmed upper ends of curtains without the use of pins or other connectors.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which may be formed of one piece of sheet metal bent to provide a box-like structure open at the top and the back and having slots in the bottom through which the curtains extend, there being slots in the end walls having enlarged ends through which the hems of the curtains are passed to apply the curtains to the device.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will be formed of a few strong simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a window equipped with a window shade and curtain holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of the device showing the slot for receiving the rectangular gudgeon of the shade and showing the slots for receiving the hemmed upper edges of the curtains.
Figure 4 is an elevation of the opposite end of the device from that shown in Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a detail cross sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1 and showing the curtain and the drape in elevation.
Figure 6 is a detail perspective view of one end of the device.
Figure '7 is a detail perspective View of the same end of the device shown in Figures 6 but showing the device partly formed.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, 10 designates a window frame, II a shade, and I2 curtains. For attaching the shade and curtain to the window frame a holder is provided preferably formed from a single blank of sheet metal forming a box-like structure open at the top and rear side. The holder comprises a front wall l3, end walls l4 extending 5 at a right angle tothe front wall, and a bottom wall IS. The end walls are provided on the rear sides with extensions [6 which extend above the top and bottom edges of the end walls and are provided with perforations I! tosecure securing 1o screws l8. The end walls are also provided opposite the extension IS with tabs l9 which extend above the top edges of the end walls and are provided with weakening lines 20 and 2|. Along the lines 20 the tabs may be bent over the front 15 wall I3, from the position shown in Figure '7, to the position shown in Figure 6, and the upper edges of the tabs may be bent upon the score lines 2| from the position shown in Figure '7 to the position shown in Figure 6 to provide hooks 20 22 which hook over the top edges of the front wall and secure the end walls, bottom wall and front wall together as a unit.
One end wall is provided with a slot 23 best shown in Figure 3, for the reception of the rec- 25 tangular shaped trunnion 24 of the shade roller 25. The opposite end wall is provided with an opening 26, best shown in Figure 4, for the reception of the cylindrical trunnion 21 of the shade roller. 30
The bottom wall 15 of the device is formed with an opening 28 through which the shade ll passes, as best shown in Figure 5. The bottom wall is also provided with parallel .longitudinally extending slots 29 to receive the curtains l2, as 35 also best shown in Figure 5.
The curtains have hemmed upper edges 30 thicker than the width of the slots to suspend the curtains from the bottom wall of the device.
The end walls of the device are provided with 40 slots 3| which register with the slots 29. The slots 3| have enlarged upper ends 32 to permit the hems of the curtains to be inserted endwise in and threaded through the slots 3| to apply the curtains to the slots 29. 45
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is: 50
1. A window shade and curtain holder comprising a box-like structure open at the top and the back and having slots in the bottom adapted to receive the upper ends of curtains which have hems at the top, said structure having end walls 55 provided with slots registering with the slots in the bottom and having enlarged upper ends to permit the hems of the curtains to be inserted in the structure, means carried by the structure for securing the same to a window casing, and means carried by the structure for mounting a shade roller therein, said bottom of the structure having an opening to receive the shade.
2. A window shade and curtain holder comprising a single blank of metal having the ends bent inwardly to provide attaching elements, said ends being provided with openings for the reception of the trunnions of a shade roller, said blank being bent to provide a bottom, said bottom being provided with an opening through which a shade may extend, said bottom being provided with slots to receive drapes having hems at their upper ends, said ends being provided with slots registering with the slots of the bottom and terminating in enlarged upper ends to receive the hems of the drapes, said blank being bent to provide a front wall, said ends being bent to overlap the front wall and terminating in hooks engaging the top edge of the front wall to assemble the device as a unitary structure.
