.No. 217.429. Patented JuIy'8,1879
NPEI'ERS. PNOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D..C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COMMODORE P. TENER, OF NEW MARKET, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO B. M. HOPKINS, OF YORKVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMBINED FINGER-NAIL CLEANEFLAND ENVELOPE-OPENER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,429, dated July 8, 1879; application filed May 3, 1879.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O. P. TENER, of New Market, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Finger-Nail Gleaner and"Envelope-Opener5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the acco'mpan yin gdrawin gs, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for cleaning finger-nails and opening envelopes; and it consists in a blade which, for convenience, may be attached to a watchkey or other similar device, and which is so constructed that it may be used for cleaning the finger-nails, as an eraser, or as an envelope cutter, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
A represents a watch-key, which is pivoted in the support O, and by means of which the key may be attached to the watch-chain. To the upper edge of this key is secured the blade I), which hasits upperend pointed and notched, as shown. This notch Eis made suffieiently deep to allow either one of the points on either side to pass under and over the top of the finger-nail, for the purpose of trimming and cleaning it, and each of the edges I leading up to this notch may be used as a scraper or cleaner for the top of the nail at its inner end, and as an eraser, if so desired. The edge 0 of this blade upon each side, just above the upper end of the watch-key, is made slightly concave, and is sharpened, so as to act as a paper-cutter or for opening envelopes, and other similar purposes. Upon one or both sides of the blade is formed a file, O, which may be used for trimming and shaping the ends of the finger-nails and other such purposes.
In opening envelopes, the notch is inserted under one edge of the paper, and it may then be forced entirely across the envelope, opening it as it goes, or, after having opened the envelope sufficiently at one, corner, the blade may be inserted until the cutting-edges I are brought to bear against the paper, whenthe balance of the envelope can be cut open with perfect ease. This edge I is also adapted for cutting paper in any form.
The blade, as here shown, for the sake of convenience. is attached to the watch-key, where it will always hang ready for use when needed; but it is evident that the blade need not necessarily be used in this connection alone.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The blade D, having the notch E in its end for cleaning and trimming the nails, and the straight edge I for scraping the tops of the nails and for erasing, substantially as shown.
2. The blade D, having the notch E, straight- O. P. TENER.
