Description

C. DU BRUL. Oigar-Gutt'r.
No. 217,351. Patentd July 8,1879.
ITNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
GYRIAO DU BRUL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,351, dated July 8, 1879 application filed June 2, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OYRIAG DU BRUL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Cigar-Gutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement on those apparatus for trimming the butt-ends of cigars Wvhich comprise a bed or trough having an adjustable gage for different lengths of cigars, "and a vibrating severingknite pivoted-to the bed; and my improvements consist in the provision, in connection with such an apparatus, of a separable and reversible blade, and of devices for enabling its easy removal and insertion, and of holding it firmly in place after insertion, and of preventing for the time being the unused edge of the blade from imparting or receiving injury.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar-butt-trimming machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a full-sized representation of my two'edged blade detached.
A is a bed or base, which may be of Wood. Perforations a in this bed enable its secure attachment to a bench or other fixture. B is a semicircular trough or cavity to receive and hold the cigar. O is an adjustable gage or stop, which, being set at any desired part of scale D, serves to determine the length of the ei ar.
Attached to the end of bed Ais a throatplate, J, perforated to afford journal-bearing to the shaft E of vibrating lever F. The end of shaft E remote from the lever occupies a bearing, G, screwed to the top of the base. A helical spring, H, (which surrounds the shaft E, and has one end engaged around a stud or pin, I, upon the shaft, and its other end caught upon the top of the base,) performs the double function of holding the lever to its normal position against the throat-plate, (so as both to secure the separable cutter and to cause it to hug the throat-plate,) and of returning the lever to its original and vertical position, as seen in the figures, after each cutting. At j the plate J is formed into a throat, which embraces the cigar around the lower half of its circuit, and, being brought to a sharp edge, coacts with the knife to sever the surplus portion from the'butt. At the plate J is so formed as to coact with a stud upon the lever F, to arrest the latter at the end of its retrograde stroke.
Attached to the outer side of throat-plate J is a check, K, which corresponds in contour with the throatj, from which it is sufficiently separated to permit the descent of the knife in the cutting action, but to which it is sufficiently near to support the back of the knife and oblige the knife to hug the throat j. The member K also serves to support the extreme butt-end of the cigar while the knife is doing its work.
The portionf of the lever remote from the throat is curved outward, so as to constitute a guard, that prevents injury either to or from the unused edge of the knife.
L represents my reversible two-edged blade, knife, or cutter; ll, its two similar cuttingedges. Said blade also has a notch, M, which engages over the shaft E, and an orifice, N, which engages over a stud, 0, upon the lever. The stud 0 also serves, in conjunction with the scalloped edge j of the standard, to arrest the lever at the limit of its backward stroke.
To remove the blade L from the machine, or to bring its other edge into service, it is merely necessary to draw the lever away from the standard, as indicated by arrow in Fig. 1, when the blade may be easily lifted out for sharpening or substitution by a new one, or for simple reversal to bring the unused edge into service.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. In a cigar-trimmer, (butt-cutter,) the reversible two'edged blade L, having the notch M and. the orifice N, for engagement over shaft E and stud O of the operating-lever F, in-the described combination with the throat-plate J and spring H, for the purpose set forth.
2. In the described combination, the reversible blade L and the guard-lever F f, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
OYRIAO DU BRUL.
